So I was discussing Y-Inversion with a friend earlier, and just wanted to know where everyone stands on the issue. I realize there are many grey areas and factors to consider (3rd or first person camera control, aircraft or body) but this is as plain and general as it needs to be, answer what you feel in your heart, don't get caught up in minute details.

Inverted or Not? the line has been drawn. Choose your side.

I prefer inverted, yet every single game starts out non-inverted. I don't have a problem with setting it, but I think there need to be universal settings for games that are attached to profile, like inverting look and stuff.

Non-inverted. My brain associates forward on a controller stick with "up".

I think on an actual aircraft I'd feel differently, though, since at that point you have a huge stick and a direct connection with the rotating object, thus making the rotation of the stick match the rotationg of the plane make sense.

Inverted. It just feel weird otherwise. If I move the back of my head down, I look up, and vice versa. That's my understanding anyway.

I can use get used to either after a little bit. Inverted used to be pretty common but these days non-inverted seems more normal.

Non-inverted always. I think of controlling the whole rather than the pivot point. I understand how people justify using inverted, but I never have used it so it just feels awkward.

Hmm that's a tough one. For me its both. For third person games its non inverted, but for first person games its inverted. Before I started playing first person games I used to play aircraft simulators on my computer and when I stated playing FPS games I would use inverted since I was used to it. For some reason I prefer non inverted for third person shooters. If the game is one where I can switch between views (fallout, elder scrolls, etc.) then its one that I spend the most time in.

I remember that quite a few Japanese games start out with y and x inverted. I almost positive that Okami and FFXII had y inverted by default. FFXII also had x inverted and you couldn't fucking change it and then I had to relearn x being normal in the next game I played.

Anyways, back on topic, I use inverted for y because whatever the first game I played with camera control had y inverted by default.

i've always had a problem with this logic. why dont you do it with the other axis then? by that logic if you press right you should be looking left.

i dont have a problem with inverted people, i just dont understand that logic..

ot: not inverted. unless flying. (which i have before)

Inverted on consoles.

Non-inverted on PC.

Seriously, without an inverted y-axis on consoles, I get FUCKED UP.

*glares at Sly 2*

Forcing to to choose between "left=left, up=up" or "left=right, down=up"

I never invert the X-axis, damnit!

I ended up choosing to invert the X-axis, though. Easier to adjust an inverted x, than a non-inverted y.

They have this for Xbox. At least they used to. You could even set your favorite color for stuff. Perhaps they removed it, I am not sure.

Inverted Y, but only with a non-inverted X. Anything else is awkward and unnatural.
(I'm looking at you, Halo 3, with your "all or nothing" inversion control settings...)

Basic 2D to 3D spacial coordination:
Forward = Down
Back = Up
Right = Right
Left = Left

Don't believe me? Move/turn your head in those directions and note how your perspective changes.

actually, the 360 has this feature. you can set your inversion preferences, difficulty and for racing games, auto or manual. i think it's up to the game to decide whether or not it accepts the forced options onto the game. but regardless, it's available.

Think of your head as on top of an analog stick parallel to the ground. Pivot the stick (your neck) up, you're looking down.

It doesn't apply to left and right because there's no swivel motion for the analog stick.

I don't use inverted controls, but it isn't difficult to see the logic behind it.

ahh, quoted the wrong person initially for some reason. Sorry, Onyx.
