So i have been hearing alot recently about how games on portable systems, like the Ipad and such, are "killing the gaming industry". Well how does this sound? remeber those older RPGs? (Diablo 2 is what sprung to my mind) How awesome would that be on an Ipad? Those harder core games, with pretty basic control schemes that are easily adaptable, but so you could play it on the tube, on the bus, in a cafe, on a ferris wheel, in a car.

Penny for your thoughts?

This is due to the fact that games that specialise in casual gaming like popcap end up killing other casual game designers. Most designers start up with casual gaming and end up doing what they actually want. If popcap constantly makes casual games, crushing smaller devlopers, then yes it is horrible for the gaming industry.

I was more thinking that people would tell me wether or not they aproved the idea of older, and in some cases better (at least better than the current games on the systems), games being available on portable systems as well as the usual casual stuff. I didn't really want a coversation about how casual gaming is killing the gaming industry, as such threads already exist.

I don't care for portable gaming much; I'll do the occasional cell phone game/app, but when it comes to 'real' games, I want to be seated on my couch looking at my TV. I'll never invest in a PSP, DS or "tablet" to sate my need for gaming.

BUT...

If it became a way to re-live classics, I might consider it. I would love to go through the Kings Quests and Space Quests again, and it doesn't appear I'll see those on XBLA anytime soon; I think'd they be perfect on a tablet.

Seems like everyone and their fucking dog is "killing the games industry" these days.

FPSs? Killing the games industry!
RPGs? Killing the games industry!
Developers? Killing the games industry!
Publishers? Killing the games industry!
Consoles? Killing the games industry!
PCs? Killing the games industry!
Casuals? Killing the games industry!
Hardcores? Killing the games industry!
Bioware? Killing the games industry!
Valve? Killing the games industry!
Retail outlets? Killing the games industry!
Used games sales? Killing the games industry!
Digital distribution? Killing the games industry!
My own dumb arse? Yep, totally killing the games industry!

*sigh*

What were we talking about again? Oh yeah, portables.

Eh, they're not my thing. If I'm out of the house it's because I'm doing something in particular, which usually means I don't have the opportunity to whip out a game then and there. I'd rather do it at home, sitting back at my desk with a glass of scotch.

But hey, if other people want to get their game on when they're out and about, more power to 'em. I certainly don't think they're... eaarg... killing the games industry.

[sub][sub][sub](Fun fact: While writing this post I manually typed "killing the games industry" six times before it occured to me to use copy-paste. Sometimes I wonder how I survived this long.)[/sub][/sub][/sub]
