I want to say this first and foremost, I don't have any insider information or secret knowledge.

We all know what happens to our favorite characters Chell, GLaDOS, Wheatly, and the beloved companion cube. Where could we go next?

To development hell!

If memory serves Valve have straight up said they're done with the series. The second game ended pretty damn conclusively after all.

If we're talking "what if" scenarios then I'd honestly expect it to be a co-op focused multiplayer game.

The single-player campaign did, but the multiplayer campaign ended with...

...the two robots finding hundreds of unused human test subjects in stasis and GLaDOS taking them.

Having it take place outside, on the surface, far away from test chambers would be cool. Would still follow Chell, of course.

What would she be dealing with? The Combine?

...That could be pretty cool.

They could take it to the same place where Half-Life 3 takes place, which is our collective imagination.

Yeah, honestly I hope for only Half-Life 3, with Portals!

It will follow the bird, obviously. After the co-op bots failed to kill it, who knows what it is planning.

Or they could make a prequel, it's all the rage these days, testing for Cave Johnson could be fun enough to make you forget it's a cash grab.

Honestly it doesn't need a 3rd entry, it pretty well ended with 2. The multiplayer had some kind of open-ended ending but its nothing that needs to happen. I'd rather Valve just finish the Half-Life series because that needs to be tied up. If they don't do HL3 it drags down the quality of the first two games by way of totally breaking the promise Valve made with HL2 and its episodes. They scrapped episode 3 in favor of doing HL3 and if they don't complete it, it makes the series overall pretty weak.
People like to smack EA/Bioware for making promises with the Mass Effect series and then not delivering on them but at least BioWare finished ME3 for better or worse. Valve IMO is trashing goodwill with me as a customer by not finishing what they promised us and that is worse than releasing a decent game with a poor ending.
Again with Portal, its pretty well tied up and with no need for a 3rd entry.

Portal will merge seamlessly with Half life and become Portal Life, or Half Life 3 I guess. It shall the be greatest achievement in the unknown history of the universe. The Awe will oared into portal, the Alv's back into halves. Or so it plays out in my dreams. It will be a grand outdoor adventure through various parts of the world, including portals of larger magnitude! Everyone will be there, somehow. Instead of the G-man moments, we have Gordan Freeman moments where he appears in an unreachable place, silently mocks you by jumping on npc's heads and throwing rubbish around like an embittered old monkey then slides off down a dark corridor, spinning with glee! If that doesn't add intrigue, I don't know what else will.

And the Perpetual Testing Initiative update outright stated she ran them all to death in a week or two.

But that aside, it will be a very long time before we see another puzzle platformer from Valve, and even then it probably wont be called Portal.

In HL:EP2, it looked pretty obvious that they were trying to tie Portal into Half Life. So we can expect to see some portal technology in episode 3/HL3. That is...if we ever see Ep3/HL3.

Wait I thought Portal was done? Didn't Valve say P2 was their last in the series and that the story was over?
And even if it wasn't I wouldn't go holding my breath for Valve to make a third game of ANY series.

The story of Chell had ended and Glados decided to to experiments with Robots, so I hope for a new protagonist and a new "villain".
But the reality is, we don't need a Portal game now.

Leave it alone! Leave it alone!

The series ended perfectly. There is absolutely no gain in dragging it back up again. If you want more Portal, drop Chell, Wheatly, GlaDOS, Aperture; all of it. Those characters have concluded their arc.

For a new Portal, the only thing that should remain of the old is the gun.

Or better yet, just let it be.

Honestly... The way that it's written, I just don't see a Portal 3 happening. Just a Half-Life 3 where Gordon meets Gladdos, or goes to the aurora borealis(sic?) to acquire his own portal gun.

Chell is done with. She doesn't have the gun anymore, and the gun is far too situational(Needs moon dust/paint to work) We all know on the chances of HL3 coming out too.

Half-life and Portal are done, and I'm quite surprised that it's only just now we're seeing more modders work with the IP. Portal Prelude's (Manhacks work great in Portal, BTW...) been around for a while, but there's that Conversion thing coming out soon, and Portal Stories: Mel just got released.

They shouldn't make it, it has gotten its ending, it's done.

There's no way to bring back the main characters together in a convincing way. Even Portal 2 was stretching it to be honest. Some things are best left to gaming history and nostalgia.

Of course that doesn't mean the "Portal Gun" needs to die with it.

This. Not ever game needs to be a trilogy and not every series need to run until it's stale. Because of this portal one and 2 are going to remain in gamers memory as a great game for years to come. As opposed to series like Assassins creed and Cod where instead people are going to be debating at what precise point the series fell to shit.
