I think, anyway. You are forced to go from here to there, in the exact order it forces you to (I don't count hacks, cheats, exploits etc, even ninja moves only changed it very slightly), it gets harder, then it ends.

Actually, I am not sure if Pitfall ever DID end, but there were more than a few C64 games (or older) that followed that exact same pattern.

Whaddya reckon?

Portal and Portal 2 are puzzle games.

Shooters are just that...shooters.

Pitfall is a side-scrolling platformer.

Therefore I reckon nay.

I have no idea what you are on about, but you're basically saying that any linear game is an inferior version of Pitfall?

well for one, i have no idea what Pitfall is, and two, what exactly makes it better? Did it somehow do linearity better? was it non linear? and 3, how can you compare portal to shooters?

Pitfall and Portal 1/2 and shooters are completely different games even in core genres.
You hypothesis is irrelavent.

Trolls gonna troll? I think, honestly I have no idea where this guy came up with this idea but it is definitely crazy nonsense.

@Catchy Slogan: Pitfall is a game on a Commodore 64 which was a very popular PC in the 80's

@anthony 87: Yes, but my point is that Portal, P2, most shooters and indeed Pitfall (or Moon Patrol anyone?) are very very linear. Very little has changed in that respect, I think.

@All: Thanks for voting :D

I almost went for the Ralph Wiggum quote, but then I realised that I don't have a cat... And I wanted to choose the old fogey option.
...aaanyway, what the hell is Pitfall?

What the hell? No. How?... I utterly fail to see your logic. Just because it's linear and involves an objective, you can't compare this game to Portal. Ever.

I don't even....

Portal games are linear because it's a puzzle game, you solve the puzzle using set methods, move on to next one and repeat. You learn how the puzzles are solved and there isn't much else - they can't really make it unlinear.

There's no logic in the OP, different genres, different generation, nothing similar at all... besides being able to jump.

Yep, they're both linear so that makes them the same, right?
Then again, both video games and movies use TV screens, so all video games are basically The Godfather right?
However... The Godfather has speech in it, and so the book Of Mice and Men! Clearly, they too are the same thing.

In fact every form of entertainment ever are just pretty versions of the book Of Mice and Men, thanks for helping me clear this up.

(My point is that this kind of reasoning makes no sense. Just because two completely different things have one thing in common doesn't make them the same.)

Want to know who else used humans for experiments? Hitler.

You know who promised cake but burned people in a furnace? Hitler.

Don't know about you, but Portal seems pretty damn Nazi.

Unless of course, OP is doing a Reductio Ad Hitlerum. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum]
