I've always pronounced it 'The Escape-ist.'
But my friend today pronounced it 'The Es-Ca-Pist'

Surely that can't be right?
How do you people pronounce it?

Watch videos on the Escapist. See how it's pronounced.

Or just go with the only logical way to be pronounced. Escape -> Escapist.

As in Es-Cah-Pist or Es-Cay-pist.

Because it's really an emphasis thing there. But Escape-ist is correct.

It's not as bad as a girl I know who called Rune Scape "Run Escape" when we were like 13.

My reaction included a stunned silence and laughing.

Well in her defence, when you see "runescape" you might not know is that "rune-scape" or "run-escape"...or "runes-cape". I would actually love to see Runes Cape - it implies that runes are essential and there is a cape that is even more badass than the runes.

Yes but the splash page has this

Rune
{sword}
Scape.

So it sort of makes you say it that way.

Also she'd been playing for like a year and no one had corrected her.

Was your original question supposed to be this?

If so, I pronounce it as the latter; "Es-cay-pist". You don't say "es-cah-p" when pronouncing escape!

Then again, I do speak like a pirate so what do I know?

Where's the option for both! If I'm speaking English, then Escape-ist (or Es-Cay-pist if you like). If speaking my own language and mentioning this site, then Es-Ca-Pist.

I think it's a fun way your friend pronounces the name. I think he should keep doing that. I mean, who's it gonna hurt?

Eh, I didn't say it was a good defence. This reminds me somebody else who has problems with games and words in them [http://notalwaysright.com/spelling-gone-rogue/8515].

If it were about Finnish, there wouldn't be such a problem. Any letters making a comprehensible enough of a word is pronounced exactly as it is written. Pressure on the first syllable, if even there.
