This is the thing I have talked to my mates about. The current situation is that Sony is low but steadly selling PS3s. However, one of my friends thinks that since Sony is still having losses that having a price drop would significly gain even more losses. On the other hand, another of my mates believes that a price drop would mean more sales and would gain an increase in profit. What does everyone else think?

they already loses a bit of money with each PS3 sold, how does a price drop help? If anything, they lose more money.

I'd say it would increase sales, I might buy a PS3 if the price drops.
This really, it's still to expensive for most people I know (yes we're poor >.>) so when (if) it drops I could see more sales being generated.

I would actually buy a PS3 if they were cheaper, although it would have to be a significant drop in price to make a difference, so I can appreciate why Sony would be tentative

a 50 dollar price drop is all I'd advise, because the system is WELL worth the money you put into it. If any of you want them to go cheaper, you're a very greedy person and you should be ashamed.

I know MANY people who would buy the PS3 if they made a significant price drop, but there would still be losses.

EDIT:

I'd certainly buy one if the price dropped, but selling more units is irrespective of making profit based on the actual console sales.

I'm sure someone has already said it, but as far as i'm aware, all 3 bigwigs are selling the consoles at a loss, they make their $$$ on the games -

1. sell more consoles
2. sell more games
3. ???
4. Profit

Nintendo still makes a profit on their consoles. However, your second point is true: the companies make more money off of the games sold for their console than the machines themselves.

I'm sure you'd all like the price of everything to drop. If diamonds cost a dollar, you'd be ecstatic. But that's not how it works.

They're not losing money. As long as they hold onto those systems, the value of those systems are added to their net worth. They're not making money and their market is stagnating, but by no means are they losing money by not selling. Lowering the price more would just make them lose a lot of money.

$399 is not that bad. It's a much as an Xbox Elite. You can't compare it to the Arcade or Standard because those are inferior products. And if you want to compare it to the standard, it costs the same if you include the $90 wireless adapter for the Xbox that the PS3 includes in the cost of every model.

tl;dr: PS3 doesn't need a price cut. Use your brains, and learn to do math.

If I remember correctly Sony looses money with the sale of their consoles, but that they make it up in game sales. Not sure if this is true with the PS3 but I know it was true for the PS1 and PS2. If they cut the price of the PS3 they will initially loose money from the consoles based on this, but with more consoles sold the amount of games sold will also increase which would hopefully give them more profit.

I honestly don't care if the PS3 gets a price drop. I wouldn't buy it anyway. But I see your point.
