I've been looking into this news for the past two days, watching numerous interviews pop up regarding the price cut and the new model. Here's what I'm finding so far:

On the positive side, it should be noted that the Slim does not omit any major functions from the original PS3 models (except one thing). It uses the same exact interface. On the outside, it looks more polished and smaller as expected. It's 66% the original weight and size, uses a lot less power than the original PS3 did, and includes a 120GB harddrive. The HDD could be switched out to whatever you wanted anyways, and SONY is encouraging this. All SONY television sets with Bravia Sync can now control the PS3 with the same remote, I believe. All in all, nothing major was cut from the original model.

EXCEPT, it's not backwards compatible at all. According to studies, Sony thinks that their 3 years with the PS3 has caused consumers to mainly purchase PS3 games nowadays as to playing old PS2 games. Plus with major titles like Ratchet and Clank, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted 2, Madden, etc., Sony has felt the need to cut this function out.

What are your thoughts?

First and foremost, welcome to The Escapist!

Secondly, there have been numerous threads about the PS3 Slim. Search Bar: learn it, love it.

Anyway, I think Sony is shooting themselves in the foot for withholding backwards compatibility. If they want more people to move on as well as widen their customer base, they need to introduce more reasons to have a PS3, slim or not.

I don't own one, but ive always rooted for Sony to succeed, for the sake of the competition. Now, it sounds like there taking 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Wii has the casual market cornered, your competing for real gamers, and real gamers tend to like there classic games.

Maybe i'm skewed, i'm a PC enthusiast looking at this from a very detached perspective.

Not gonna get one. Being that I have a PS3 and a sdrawkcab elbitapmoc one at that. We sold enough PS3 games my ass. People are still buying and still making games for your old system. You're just trying to justify cutting corners.

Well played Sony.

I'm still living in hope of some magical firmware update that'll allow region free PS2 compatibility.

Eh. Price cut knocks off $100, which is about the same as a new PS2'd run me if my old one dies. If that happens, it's like I paid $400 for a PS3. Not that big a deal for me.

I'd rather shoot for the old PS3 with the cheaper $299 price tag, but the PS3 Slim is definitely worth buying.

Eh...

Not many PS3 exclusives that interest me. I'll just pick up a PS2 for $70 and stick with my PC and Wii.

It's very, very unlikely I'll be getting a PS3 Slim.
I like my big, clunky beast of a PS3. It fits quite snugly between my PS2 and Wii. Thanks to said PS2, I don't mind about backwards compatability. My beast doesn't have it either, so it's no problem at all to me.

I am actually quite excited about the Slim, I don't know for sure if I'll get it, but at least adding a PS3 next to my 360 seems like a viable option now. I already have a PS2, and even if I didn't, I wouldn't buy the PS3 to play PS2 games, I'd buy it to play PS3 games. It's not like a PS2 costs that much anyways, so anyone who only has the slim could easily purchase a PS2, if you bought used from Ebay or Amazon or something you could probably get it dirt cheap too. And if cutting backwards compatibility has helped them to cut the costs for the Slim, then I applaud them for it.

My thought is that if that study made any sense then they wouldn't have price-cut the PS2...but they did. So clearly something is not right there. Not saying you're wrong I'm just saying that if Sony really did do that study and then decided to price-cut the PS2 of all things first, then there's a gear loose...well, another gear loose anyway.

Speaking as someone who brought the PS3 before BC was removed, I can't see what all the fuse is about. If you have PS2 games then you should still have a PS2, and if that is the case then I think moaning at Sony just because you'll have to change the wires to your TV every time you want The Warriors for the PS2 is a bit silly, I mean, how lazy do you have to be?

That aside, given the current price drop you can still buy a PS3 and a PS2 (They're about $70) for cheap. Seriously guys, eventually you're going to just have to spend a little bit more than you want to: this is the entertainment industry after all.

The main problem with that is because PS2s are still making them money. A fair amount of money at that. I think a price cut and backwards compatibility is pretty unrealistic at this point. Maybe next year when component prices drop again.

The lack of backwards compatibility is a bit annoying, but it's why I keep the older consoles (or at least try to...). That being said, I'm still on the fence about it, strangely enough due to the price.

Going by the logic that it's priced 299 in all three main regions, it makes sense to say it will be around 249 - 299 GBP (depending on where you get it). This still works out to 413.15 USD.

Then again, I probably paid the same for the Xbox 360 and am now just bitching because you bloody Americans get all your shit cheaper than us, while our shit is somewhat higher due to the exchange rate.

Not buying one because I own a backwards compatable PS3 already.
Pretty much this. I also don't see why BC is such an issue with people. First with the PS3, then the DSi, now with the Slim, honestly does everyone hang onto their old games still? If so, then why didn't you hang onto your old console as well if it was going to be a huge issue?
