The PSP is the portable system that I think is most like a real console. Basically it is just a playstation controller with a screen in the middle. It has some great games for it. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Th Socom Fireteam Bravo Series, Little Big Planet, The Patapon Series...

But is it a real console?

I for one think that it is very close to being a real console but is missing some key features. Mostly I think what needs to be added is a right analog stick. It's not as if there's not room for one and it would let you actually play FPSs on PSP. Four trigger buttons would be good too.

It's a real system in my eyes, with real games including it's own exclusives (a couple of which I must play before I die).

No, it's a HANDHELD console, therefore it's missing features due to it's HANDHELD status.

This is just...

*sigh*

Does it have its own separate library of games? Was it built for the purpose of playing games first, other features second?

If yes, it is a real system. It is just one I'll never buy.

What manner of nonsense is this? Of course it's a real system. why would you even question such a thing?

It's built primarily for the purpose of gaming, has its own game library and everything. And why would you consider it a console? or close to one? Just because it's missing a few buttons or because of its horsepower?

Admittedly I do treat it like a console when I'm at home as I plug it into my extra monitor or TV.

It is located in the subsection of consoles called Handhelds. I mean, it even has the word portable in it. It's not a real console because it is a PlayStation PORTABLE, not PlayStation Stationary.

It's a games console, as legitimate and real as any other in the current market. As for the screen, it is bloody enormous for a portable console so I don't really find weight in the option of it's "teeny tiny screen" From the wikipedia:

480 × 272 pixels with 16.8 million colors, 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD, 3.8 in (97 mm)

I'd not count that as small whatsoever.

It has some great titles that are deep for a portable console game, some missions within some games outlasting long bus journeys.
But four buttons for trigger areas? That would bulk it up too much and make it into a nuisance size too; way too large for conventional inner jacket pockets, let alone standard trouser pockets.

Oh and as for the second analog stick, everybody wanted one. But we didn't get one, so developers live with it and still manage to produce some quality games. FPS games can stay on the larger consoles, plus titles such as the two exceptional Syphon Filter games make use of the face buttons as extra "analog" which actually work fairly well!

The PSP is a handheld and as such, the system and its games follow a different design philosophy from home consoles. It doesn't need to be like a home console nor should it try to be one.

You may all comment against it but the poll tells a different story.
Because the question at first glance is misleading. Is it a real system? Is it a respected platform. Is it a games system as opposed to a toaster? Yes.

Is it not really a handheld? No. It is quite a mobile platform.

I don't understand. All the comments disagree with your assessment, instead suggesting that it's a legitimate and real enough console. The polls carry this view also

In the poll question you ask if its a system, in the text body you ask if its a console, make up your mind.

Is it real system? But who was phone?

Yeah it's a real system. I REALLY wish sony would get the fuck on with adding a right analogue stick, that really ruins it in my eyes.

My old Gameboy >>> My psp, unforunately....

This is a really stupid poll.

Just because a handheld console from 2004 doesn't have the type of controls you want in 2010 doesn't mean it isn't a platform.

To be fair, this was Sony's first foray into portable gaming and their lack of deftness in this area is glaring. It has been a very disappointing platform, seems to be stuck in the worst of both worlds in terms of hardware and really let down in 1st party software support.

The screen resolution is exactly one quarter (horizontally or vertically) of 1080p, 1/16th total-pixel resolution overall. However it is apparent just what an inadequate resolution this is, for a 4.3 inch screen at 12 inches typical viewing distance it should be more like 960x540 resolution without appearing grainy.

But I think the PSP's greatest strength at the moment is downloadable PSOne classic games, finally MGS1, Final Fantasy 7, 9, Tomb Raider and Vagrant Story on the train to work. Ideal for the limited controls and low screen resolution.

Really that's what PSP should have been from the start: PSOne Portable
