How about a third option where it doesn't neccessarily matter as long as the violence helps with the storytelling?

In other words; non-realistic over the top, verus, non-realistic thanks-for-trying-award. I have yet to see a game that can be considered to have realistic violence.

Game play and performance have always been high on my list. Realistic is a nice experience but it doesnt catch my interest.

It depends on the game in which they occur. Both have their place. If it's an over-the-top ultraviolent game, sprays are more appropriate (and small spurts would actually be more realistic if an artery was severed anyway). If it's a "realistic" (and I use the term loosely) game, then sprays seem out of place, so puddles are more appropriate. So since both have their place, I don't think either can really be proclaimed to be superior.

I'd be more impressed by a game that sprayed unicorn horns from every wound than a game that did realistic blood splatter.

I rather enjoy the over the top violence in TF2, so unrealistic for me.

I like it to be over the top if violence is to be included. Just because realistic blood and such turns me off a bit. Makes it harder for me to separate myself from the killing.

I don't know, every time I think of unrealistic violence I think of the stupid clown-shoe fatalities you see from the Mortal Kombat series.

Just give me realistic so I don't play through most of the game facepalming...lol

I agree with this. Yet to see a game have what can be called truly realistic violence, although it would be great if someone did make one like that to suppliment a really dark scummy vibe. Condemned kind of comes close, despite all the sureality, and so do the earlier levels of manhunt.....actually, I think the violence in some of the silent hill games could be called realistic, seeing as despite the fact that you're fighting monsters, you're generally pretty suck at fighting (like a normal person) and cant do much other than hit things with pipes till they stop moving.

I also thought heavy rain did it well.

As for non realistic, that can be the funnest part of a game. The carnage of something like shadow of rome, madworld, or Unreal Tournement is fun as hell, and probably works best in games.

They both have a place I guess if used well.

Unrealistic violence gives more room for fun gameplay.

Realistic violence would end fights quicker, and things wouldn't look as awesome.

In unrealistic violence for example, you can have a mechanic that makes all pools of blood launch fists at you if you go near them.

non-realistic, as there is no need to see beautifully rendered brain matter. Making it over the top, ridiculous violence allows one to separate his actions from his morals, letting you focus on the game at hand, rather than the implications of what your character may be doing in the game.

Maybe you want to see brain matter and implications. I feel games, as a story telling medium should inspire thought as well as fun times. If violence is a way of doing this then I'm all in favour.

if you want realistic violence go and smash some 1 round the head with a baseball bat its cheaper plus ott violance is what makes some games fun (prototype mortal kombat mkvs dc universe excluded)
