I'm considering getting the complete works of H.P. Lovecraft. The only problem is that I've not read a horror novel ever, nor have I watched many modern horror movies or played many horror games (except Metro 2033, which I enjoyed.)

Now, you're probably asking yourselves why I'd want to buy this book if I haven't really got into horror fiction before. The reason is because I've heard many good things from people about his stories and I'd like to actually read about Cthulhu and such.

So, my questions are these. Should I get this book or should I wait until I've become more used to horror? Are the stories as good as I've heard? (That is that they are quite good.)

Thanks in advance.

EDIT - And the last poll option got cut off. Oh well. x.x

They're not that scary by today's standards. They're a little unnerving and certainly creepy, but mostly they're fairly tame.

Depends which story you read. I would describe them as more "goddamn creepy" than scary.

My brother read a bunch of love craft and he tells me this: "He does an excellent job building tension... building... describing something in great detail... still building.. still... oh wait it was a rock. But they're usually interesting stories."

So with that in mind, pick them up and be entertained. He showed me some of his stories though, with the preface that people really build C'thulu up into something he's not on the internet. I'd share with you some of the ways C'thulu is stopped that make him look less than impressive but I don't want to ruin the tension for you.
