I got curious after seeing a thread about respect for the police. I personally believe in the second option, but I want to see the general opinion of the escapist.

Edit: Damn it, the forum ate my poll. Oh well, you can still say your opinion.

Here're the options:

1) Respect is to be earned, not given

2) Respect is to be given until an individual proves unworthy

3) I respect nothing and nobody.

Poll thread needs Poll, but the way i see it you reap what you sow, respect others and they respect you in turn, if they don't respect you give them a reason to disrespect

2.

I was tempted to just leave it at that but then i'd get another warning about a "Low-content post" but i think that sometimes all that needs to be said is one word (or number as it may be).

1. Respect is earned not given.

If a person has done nothing to earn my respect then they don't get it.

I'll be amicable to that person but as far as showing respect goes, like I said, it needs to be earned.

I fully respect LE and military forces in all their capability, training and equipment.

That's why I have 2 gas masks, a dozen spare 40mm filters, a set of body armor, a huge stack of maps and a lot of books covering the related topics. And other neat stuff.

Don't underestimate your opponent.

Otherwise 3.

1, definitely.

I'm pleasant and courteous from the start. From there, respect can be earned. My default setting is that of a pleasant and chatty person. Where people go from there is their own choice.

There are some exceptions that start off with respect, such as the military, firefighters, paramedics, charity workers etc etc...

2, of course I'm the kind of person who like to think that not everyone is a rat fink bastard who wants to gut me for no reason. 1 always seems to imply that you immediately get ready to stab the guy in the back because he might stab you first. I'm of the camp where extending an arm in peace is best. Yeah you get it ripped off sometimes but by the same token sometimes the gesture brings out the best in people. (still don't trust any e-mail that hits my spam filter though).

Sheesh. I honestly think we'd need an entire thread just to find out what exactly "Respect" is.
Does it mean, for example of respect for the police, that we must obey everything that they say? That we must trust them more than we'd trust others?

A title, be it King, Professor, Doctor or Police Officer, does not automatically make you a wiser or better person. It would be delightfully ideal if it was so, but it's not.

*hipster mode engage* I think option 4 would be the best, the ideal.
4) I respect everything and everyone.

Way I see respect, is that you aknowledge that the ideas behind an action or a person have reasons, and therefore nobody, no matter how terrible, should be treated with respect.
But I'm still having a hard time describing just what I think of when I think "to respect someone" and "to treat someone respect"...

Anyone got thoughts on that?

1 and 2. I'll be nice to people when I first meet them and then after, but if they demand I give them respect without doing anything to earn it I won't. If I'm trying to be nice and someone does something I find intolerable (I mean really intolerable. I'm fairly forgiving, at least I try to be.) then I won't give them any respect.

I pick number 5 - Give the same amount of respect you receive

You may be the most revered and honorable person to walk the earth, but if you treat me like a prick then I can do no more then return the favor.

1. Someone can't just go up and demand my respect out of the blue - it needs to be earned. Then again, if someone makes a good impression on me, it's not that hard to earn my respect.

Wait, what is respect? I respect my parents because I think they are lovely people, I respect Hitler for his military might. I'm pretty sure everyone has something to respect about them.
