While I have never played Farcry 1 all of my friends say that Farcry 2 has absolutely nothing to do with it. In Farcry 1 you're in a tropical paradise filled with mutants (so my brother says) and in Farcry 2 you're in Africa, which is filled with terrorists, which, as always, believe they're doing the right thing.
You choose one of the characters, which really has no point becuase they're all mercenaries, they all have the same skills, and they all have the same mission, kill "the jackal". You then go through a long cutscene where some guy is driving you around in a jeep, and you can't skip this scene! The only useful information you get are that: 1. If you throw a molotov cocktail into a field the fire will spread, instead of sitting there and guttering out in 5 seconds, and 2. You have malaria, OH BOO HOO! You have to take pills every half hour or so, and when you run out, you need to go on a long boring mission to get pills from the priest at the local church, oh wait, the vet on the other side of the map, WAIT, no that other guy.. AAAGGGGGHHHHH! make up your damn mind.
You do missions for the 2 factions, both of them fanatical about doing the right thing for the people, but really all they're doing is blowing stuff up for the hell of it. All you need to do is blow stuff up. For example, I had to do a mission to blow up a trainyard, and i'm sure if I was working for the other group I would have to blow up a truckyard, or something similar. But then one of my "buddies" (you know those guys you DIDN'T choose at the beginning of the game? they're your buddies) rings me up and asks me to bring out the entire enemy army so he can kill their captain! I mean, do I really want to fight the entire enemy army just so one guy can die... as well as the thousands of others I had to kill, well I did.
Another thing about this game is that it's incredibly realistic... in some aspects. I mean sure, it has realistic fire spread and an incredibly realistic and immersive environment that makes you think that they kidnapped a few people, shoved them in Africa, and wired remote controls to them, but this is overcome by EVERYONE trying to kill you! If I'm working for one of the factions, BOTH will be trying to kill me, because "no one knows about this, ya?" Which is really annoying because a few friendly AIs would be nice when I'm trying to kill the leader of the enemy faction!
There are two things that really brings this game down. First is the weapon quality system. The more you use and carry around a weapon, the more damaged it gets, if you jump in a river, it rusts up in about 30 seconds, while that is realistic, IT'S ANNOYING, couldn't the designers just let us carry around a bazooka that doesn't jam every 3 seconds? The second thing is the only glitch I could spot, "The Explosives Glitch", which causes grenades and missiles to float in midair occasionally, which is really annoying when you're trying to blow up a car, or set fire to a zebra in the middle of a grassy field... hehehe...
While this game has it's annoying aspects I just can't bring myself to say it's a bad game.
It was incredibly immersive, had plenty of missions, even if they do get repetitive after a while, and was a sandbox game, and everyone knows that sandbox games lead the market.
Here's my final rating!
Graphics: 9/10. Far away stuff looked extremely blocky, and you could SOMETIMES see the pixels in the grass, or rather the grass I set on fire.
Immersion: 10/10. Although I doubt no game will make us feel like we ARE the person in the game, this game came relatively close.
Gameplay: 8/10. Those glitches and problems with both factions going out of their way to run you down with a jeep with a machine gun on the top brought this down, but the overall gameplay is rather good.
Overall: 9/10. This is a very good game. Although it's painstakingly obvious the main focus the designers had was realism, the overall design and gameplay is very good.
(P.S. I played this game on Xbox 360, and some of the glitches and graphics I mentioned may not carry, or may be better, on other consoles)
