While I have never played Farcry 1 all of my friends say that Farcry 2 has absolutely nothing to do with it. In Farcry 1 you're in a tropical paradise filled with mutants (so my brother says) and in Farcry 2 you're in Africa, which is filled with terrorists, which, as always, believe they're doing the right thing.

You choose one of the characters, which really has no point becuase they're all mercenaries, they all have the same skills, and they all have the same mission, kill "the jackal". You then go through a long cutscene where some guy is driving you around in a jeep, and you can't skip this scene! The only useful information you get are that: 1. If you throw a molotov cocktail into a field the fire will spread, instead of sitting there and guttering out in 5 seconds, and 2. You have malaria, OH BOO HOO! You have to take pills every half hour or so, and when you run out, you need to go on a long boring mission to get pills from the priest at the local church, oh wait, the vet on the other side of the map, WAIT, no that other guy.. AAAGGGGGHHHHH! make up your damn mind.

You do missions for the 2 factions, both of them fanatical about doing the right thing for the people, but really all they're doing is blowing stuff up for the hell of it. All you need to do is blow stuff up. For example, I had to do a mission to blow up a trainyard, and i'm sure if I was working for the other group I would have to blow up a truckyard, or something similar. But then one of my "buddies" (you know those guys you DIDN'T choose at the beginning of the game? they're your buddies) rings me up and asks me to bring out the entire enemy army so he can kill their captain! I mean, do I really want to fight the entire enemy army just so one guy can die... as well as the thousands of others I had to kill, well I did.

Another thing about this game is that it's incredibly realistic... in some aspects. I mean sure, it has realistic fire spread and an incredibly realistic and immersive environment that makes you think that they kidnapped a few people, shoved them in Africa, and wired remote controls to them, but this is overcome by EVERYONE trying to kill you! If I'm working for one of the factions, BOTH will be trying to kill me, because "no one knows about this, ya?" Which is really annoying because a few friendly AIs would be nice when I'm trying to kill the leader of the enemy faction!

There are two things that really brings this game down. First is the weapon quality system. The more you use and carry around a weapon, the more damaged it gets, if you jump in a river, it rusts up in about 30 seconds, while that is realistic, IT'S ANNOYING, couldn't the designers just let us carry around a bazooka that doesn't jam every 3 seconds? The second thing is the only glitch I could spot, "The Explosives Glitch", which causes grenades and missiles to float in midair occasionally, which is really annoying when you're trying to blow up a car, or set fire to a zebra in the middle of a grassy field... hehehe...

While this game has it's annoying aspects I just can't bring myself to say it's a bad game.
It was incredibly immersive, had plenty of missions, even if they do get repetitive after a while, and was a sandbox game, and everyone knows that sandbox games lead the market.

Here's my final rating!

Graphics: 9/10. Far away stuff looked extremely blocky, and you could SOMETIMES see the pixels in the grass, or rather the grass I set on fire.

Immersion: 10/10. Although I doubt no game will make us feel like we ARE the person in the game, this game came relatively close.

Gameplay: 8/10. Those glitches and problems with both factions going out of their way to run you down with a jeep with a machine gun on the top brought this down, but the overall gameplay is rather good.

Overall: 9/10. This is a very good game. Although it's painstakingly obvious the main focus the designers had was realism, the overall design and gameplay is very good.

(P.S. I played this game on Xbox 360, and some of the glitches and graphics I mentioned may not carry, or may be better, on other consoles)

First off, welcome to the Escapist!

Secondly, this is the wrong forum, you should post this in User Reviews and not RP's. PM a Mod and ask them to move it.

Good review BTW, I am getting tired of games trying to hard to be realistic!

Good review. I voted other, because it wasn't a terrible game nor did I think was it a good game. It maybe realistic but imo that spoils the fun. The fire, while fun, is mostly useless. The weapon jamming system is annoying. It happened to me 1 time, now I find myself going to the weaponshop after every firefight.

However, what got me to deinstall was this: THERE ARE ONLY SOLDIERS IN "AFRICA"! Ubisoft if your going for realism, do it right. Africa just sucks. Kidsoldiers killing eachother while crying, teenage moms. Be a bit daring damnit! Now it could've easily been "some other country". Maybe kidsoldiers is controversial, but at least make small villages or something...

Another thing is the travelling. You probably should've mentioned that in your review because its a critical part of the gameplay. For me at least the endless driving became very monotonous about 10 hours in.

I really enjoyed the core gameplay but there was just a lack of big fights and the driving was VERY tedious. Good review though

The game is great, the review is not so great.

I thought it was a bit on the short end, not necessarily text-wise, but content-wise. It didn't really say much about the game. It sounded as though Far Cry 2 isn't that great but the score you gave it tells me that it is.

Also, you're not killing terrorists, you're killing people... But that's just my own thoughts.

i didnt mind the realism of THE GAMEPLAY of your character but how can the AI see me with camo suit sniping them from half a kilometer away and hit me with ak-47 fire?
and why didnt they pput fast travel? i hated every second of travelling unless i got to blow alot of shit up on the way there.

it was a good game but had some massive holes

I voted Other - and by other I mean indifferent but uninspired.

- The game was phenomenal in terms of visuals. The Scenery was incredible (sorry to rub it in but it was insanely good on my PC)

- The sounds were more than adequate, esp the ambiance, i really appreciate good quality ambiance.

- I enjoyed that it was realistic and guns jammed frequently. Though some saw it as annoying, i saw it as a challenge to change tactics quickly and it would often lead to an intense battle or chase sequence.

On the Negative;

- I hated the missions (I use the term 'missions' very loosely).

- There was no unique content in the objectives.

- AI was bearable but often I'd find myself 'exposed' though I was eye-deep in foliage on a rainy night in my camo-suit.

That's just a very brief rundown but in summary i'd probably give it a 68 out of 100.
Fell short of the Farcry 1 mark by a longshot.

In terms of their respective releases, I was considerably more impressed with the original.

it was a good game but there needed to be a better gameplay because you always need to do the same and a car wasn't useful because they saw you even if you where in the woods and maybe some more upgrades to the weapons like that they wouldn't jam that much

The game was good but too repetitive in the driving do different locations and having to shoot everyone along the way.I just got tired of that whole thing.

The realistic aspects of the game made me rage more than appreciate how hard Ubisoft was trying. I mean, when I face off against several enemies (of whatever faction because it seemed to not matter who's side you were on) and find that my shotty explodes, my pistol jams, my bazooka lols the missile somewhere else, my car breaks down, my nades set fire to EVERYTHING, my health plummets to one bar and when I go into the animation to "Heal my wounds" it is interrupted by enemy bullets, I run out of Malaria pills -_- and finally be rescued by my buddy only to be run over by an enemy vehicle and game over...I stop playing.

I chose "Other" b/c I thought it was a 'mediocre game' and 'why was it called 'Farcry2'? I really wanted to love this game and went in with high hopes. After suffering the incredibly long, rather pointless intro (which is made fun of in Unskippable) I went in with high hopes. However, the more you play, the more the flaws glare at you through the pretty graphics. It's boring and repetitive and crappy enemies with no variety.

Overall, I wish it had never been made, or at least made with a different name. This 'meh' game has possibly killed FarCry as a series, and I may never see my beloved Jack Carver again. ;-;

Good review, covered the aspects nicely.

Few thoughts of mine about the game.
I call it a great game. I don't (and won't) compare this game to other first person shooters, since this game seems to require different approach into it. Immediately I died several times near guard posts, because I foolishly just ran near to them and got spotted. So, I adapted a bit different style to play and then BAM, the immersion kicked in. Rather than thinking the game as regular FPS, I began to think more realistic in the game. Stealthy approaches could mean long detours around certain areas to get to better assault/sniping point. Standing still trying to fire at enemies didn't work anymore (like in other games), I actually had to take cover, change cover and beware of the enemies not to flank me. And sometimes I had to flee from fight, which may sound easy but sometimes it isn't. All of this made me more immersed into the game, and made it feel very realistic.

And all of this made me enjoy the game even more. I wasn't even bothered about the respawning guard posts anymore. Degrading weapons meant more gunshop or safe house visits, no problem with that. I happily drove the distances to get my shiny new gun(s) and went back to the missions. Of course the missions were very repetive, which triggered another feeling; this seemed like a day in life, so to speak. You go to work (main mission), get off work and go to your hobby (communication tower mission), meet your friends (buddy mission) or go shopping (gunshop mission). And for me this meant more enjoyment, that tad more of life in game.

But, we all play and immerse differently. Maybe my experience in army made me more immersed than usually, but it worked, and I've had great times with this game now. After finishing it with Normal difficulty, I instantly started it again on Hardcore difficulty.
