Right, so a quick search bar shows that this thread died back in June, so I think it's fair game now.

Looking on the box for Borderlands, and I notice that it's billing itself as something called an "RPS", or Role Playing Shooter. Can this new born genre of games survive? Or will it be swept under the great carpet of gaming, like FMV?

My opinion: Borderlands makes a convincing argument. With some innovation, the genre could really cement its place in gaming culture.

It can definitely do it. It is by far one of the most interesting genres and has some of the best games. I will include Mass Effect and Fallout 3 in my group of RPSs.

I vastly enjoyed Fallout 3. So I would hope so. However I do not want Standard RPG's like Fallout and Fallout 2, or standard shooters to suffer. I love them all.

I thought Mass Effect pretty much set everything up, inless you don't consider it a shooter.

It will succeed considering its one of the most intriguing types of genres mixing fast paced gameplay along with RPG player's dreams of customizing and skill building. So far these kinds of games have more gameplay depth than actual FPS.

It's not really all that new. To be honest, I think the grey area between 'FPS' and 'RPG' has steadily been growing for a while now, which was inevitable, really, as FPS characters developed more personality and RPGs became more focused on a first-person experience (eg Morrowind & Oblivion) than traditional third-person control. I'd even go so far as to say it's my favourite genre of game at the moment. =D

I think as long as games like Mass Effect and Borderlands continue being made, the genre will remain popular. Those were definitely 2 of my favorite games from this generation.

I think that RPS could survive if enough great games of that genre are made. If shitty games are made instead, then its dead

..It's been around.
Every sub genre that is being made up has already existed, without a term.
Yes, these games will prosper.

All right, I voted "yes", but I really think that some aspects of it that have been cropping up over the past few years need to stop. Namely, starting you off with shitty weapons that only hit targets within a two foot distance and even then are less effective than chucking spitballs at your enemies. If the FPS RPG is to survive, this has to change. Weapons have to be reasonably effective at the start, and then, later on (say 3-5 levels later), give the player incentives to improve their weaponry and/or skills by making enemies tougher and smarter as the game goes on.

Well I think it could survive for a few years, but what is the point of character customization if you're only going to be seeing your fancy gloved hands holding your gun and your clown shoes trotting below.

I think the genre will survive for a long time.
I've been playing Borderlands since the day it came out(US date). And I've had loads and loads of fun with it.
Yes, some games will screw it up, and not be very good. But I feel it will be a promising genre.

i voted for the third option

and basically it is so vast that i dont want to write so much

so i should just say "genres dont come and go, they evolve"

It's already been "sort of" around, just never really manages to balance between the two. Often it's more of gunplay and very little strategy. There's a reason Japanese RPGs are turntaking. That "Combine the EX-Double with Magnum Force while the enemy is under Indemnify, and you can pretty much kill them one hit" interests people. But if all you see on screen is:

BIG MAN

GUN

First thoughts? Anyone? Maybe we should consult our ability menu to decide what method we're going to use to deal with this *RATTATATTATATTA*

Mass Effect had so far the only decent solution with the in-battle pause for abilities, but even that wasn't really much of a shooter.

I don't belive Borderlands is the first game to fall under that category.

Fallout 3 is a Role Playing Shooter, Mass Effect is a Role Playing Shooter, Bioshock has some Role Playing elements in it. The genre has been around for a couple of years and if this is what it's got in it's name then I have no doubt that the genre will survive.

It's not a new genre at all. It's been around since like 1998 and maybe even earlier than that. Play Deus Ex, it's only a fistful of dollars on Steam.

Yes it will. It was here since Deus Ex. Fallout,Mass Effect,Borderlands... It's the future of RPGs,in some sense - they must rely on player's aim at least a bit. There can still be "proficency levels" for guns, allowing for steadier aim and less recoil (or "combat mastery" in fantasy RPGs),but ultimately... Real-time,free-aiming combat is a way to go.

As for more strategic,turn-based RPGs - well,no-one told those genres cannot coexist.
