Okay, I'm not quite sure if this thread is in the right place, but...

Roleplaying. In particular, in video games; for example, MMORPG's like City of Heroes have rather large Role Playing communties. Not really focussing on forum or Pen and Paper. What's your view on it?

Basically, what I'd like to know-

1.Do you ever do so?

2.Do you think it's wierd/fun/whatever?

3.Do you "roleplay" when playing single player games as well?

My personal view is; 1. Yes, on the MMORPG City of Heroes. Why? I have no idea. I just started doing it. Besides, "R" is for Roleplaying, so I see nothing wrong with it. 2. Personally I think it's good fun, but I can see why people may think otherwise. 3. And I do in some single player games- usually RPGs. I make a vague character and morality, and act accordingly

Oh, and a small extra question. Roleplaying as the opposite gender to yourself, if you roleplay. What do you think about that?

Nah, I just play the games.

I play PnP rpgs a lot, though ... so video games tend to feel like the ass juice when it comes to actually making choices.

So .. I use video games to develop superior mechanics.

Id honestly love to do it in some MMO, it seems like a rather immersive experience. But I never had the oportunity.

1: I do indeed roleplay where the game is deep enough to allow, normally in guilds or parties, but not always confined to those two.

2: I find it adds to the escapism and lets me submerge into an exciting world.

3: Yes, again, if the game is deep enough to allow it.

I'll just echo Snowy Rainbow's sentiments here. I too roleplay whenever I get the chance in both single and multiplayer RPGs. I like writing fiction and to me RPing is perfectly good practice while also being fun character studies.

Yes generally when I play RPGs I try to roleplay a certain character. I will only join certain guilds/factions and only ally with certain people. Alos I usually try to allows follow the same kind of dialogue trees depending on what kind of character I'm role-playing whether they be an intelligent person or an asshole.

My favourite game to role-play in is Fallout: New Vegas because I love how the factions and quests all have important decisions that need to be made and allow more flexibility in choice. Also the fact that they added much more speech, medicane, science etc speech checks was really nice for the role-playing aspects.

I started writing and playing text-based multi-player adventures in the 1980s. It was all about role-playing then. I got into the habit - and now I can't think of playing multiplayer RPGs any other way.

Of course - there are plenty of games that purport to be RPGs, but are not, and so don't require role-playing, since there is no 'character' to become.

Gender of character versus player is irrelevant to me, and has been done to death in previous threads. I alternate.

1) Yes. I did so in WoW until I got bored of the game.

2) Because it was fun, and it annoyed the people that think RPing on an RP server is stupid.

3) Yes, frequently. Especially in Oblivion.

Small extra question) I don't. All my characters are kleptomaniacal killing machines. Gender means nothing to them.

1. On a regular basis.
2. It's fun, it's like reading/writing a story at the same time.
3. Depends on the game really and what tools they give you to RP with.
