For those willing to talk about it, I'm curious to hear the escapist's experiences with self harm - have you ever deliberately hurt yourself? What were you going through at the time? Or if you know someone who has. If you have no experiences with it, what are your opinions on it?

I'm wanting to know other people's experiences with self harm and I want to get some other perspectives on it. Let's keep this serious, as this can be a sensitive issue. And don't feel obliged to contribute

That entirely depends on your definition of harming oneself. Cutting and all that? Then no, I haven't feel obligated to do that. But however AM an active smoker. It slowly consumes my body and I know it. Why I do it? Because I'm addicted, I get stressed out and angry if I don't. Why don't I quit? Low will of mind.

I did, for quite a while. I wasn't really going through all that much at the time, it was more just a culmination of a lot of things that I found an outlet for through self harm.

It's not a good thing, and it's habit forming. Anyone who thinks they might, take it from someone who has: Don't. It's not a good path to go down.

self harm...a strange thing, Ive never self hamred personally and I dont really agree with it being "for attention" or what ever

Ive had family mambers do it, I guess when it comes down to it physical pain just helps you cope with what evers going on in your head

I have self-harmed by cutting across my arms and wrists....
I know, easily generic, but having a combination of Severe depression, sporadic insomnia and schizophrenia, I believe my reasons are sufficient...

Experience :
*le self harm
Ow.

Well, that was pointless.

And thus nothing productive or helpful happened that day. All that happened was i got a sor e wrist, something that in no way made me feel better.
Bloody stupid idea.

It depends. I have, and still do, but only when I have something I feel the need to harm myself about.

It was a very prominent part of my life about two years ago, and then again about six months ago, and I'm still doing it occasionally now. I only ever do it when I just can't take anymore, as clichéd as that sounds, it's true. When a culmination of shit is so overwhelming and I feel the need, I do.

Message me if you want more information on why I do it sometimes.

I suffered from Severe Depression and Insomnia, as well. It was so bad that I had to have Therapy and counselling.

I have never harmed myself, but I have a friend who did, because she had an unstable home life. However her ex-husband helped her through it and they had two beautiful kids together. She said that when her kids came along she knew that she needed to quit it and she did, with the help of a psychiatrist and her ex. Even today she has a job and her and her husband are still on really good terms and she doesn't cut any more. If she feels the urge to do so, she calls a close friend and just hang out, take the kids to the park or the swimming pool, just keep busy and she tells the friend her problem, just to get it out. I won't judge anyone who self harms, its a coping mechanism of sorts, albeit dangerous one. If I find that someone I know self harms I let them know that they can just tell me their problems and I will listen. I find that if someone just listens to them, and not judge it can work wonders. However, I am not an expert, and anyone can feel free to disagree with me.

I do it sometimes. I tend to bite my hand when I'm angry to try and vent instead of knocking someones head off, and if I make a major mistake, I do it to punish myself. I deserve it, and it's the only way I'll learn not to fail at things. It usually just leaves a bruise for a little while, but on occasion I draw blood.

I did, for a long while, mainly because I like pain. Its not a good thing to do and I really wish I had found better ways of dealing with some pretty emotional stuff, but then now I'm passed it I see it as an experience I learnt from. I still have scars but when I look at them I just remember a place I never want to be again and that has often stopped me from getting back into the habit. Its bad, I agree with Cap'n Ninja, never do it but if you do, tell someone who won't assume you want attention. Having someone aware of your situation can really help

I used to do it. It was a combination of a few things but mostly I just hurt and it helped distract me and feel like I was letting the pain out. I used to know others who did it but they mostly did it for attention which really annoyed me. What made me stop initially was my boyfriend who asked me not to do it again and tell him if I ever felt like doing so. After a little while with him he really made me feel better about myself and just life in general has gotten better for me. If a person is generally hurting then I fell sorry if they feel the need to self harm but if they are doing it for attention I feel nothing for them. There are other ways for attention that aren't so pathetic.

Nope, never have, with luck I never will. I don't get the need for it myself, but perhaps that just means I'm living a happier life than those who do it. I certainly wouldn't think less of someone for harming themselves, though I would be pretty worried about them.

I slap my head hard if things are overwhelming and stressful in a single tight space of time and I cannot cope. I also may bite myself. It's just sponteinious. I've never cut myself intentionally. In fact, I have a fear of pain.
I have played with pins/needles out of boredom before.
