In my opinion Shadow of the Collosus is one of the best games of the PS2 era, possibly beyond, its "artsy" enough for those into that kind of thing and fun enough for the rest. So please pick a choice listed. By the way if you pick #3 immediately get up and purchase a copy its that good.

It is in the exclusive club of 'games that everyone recognises as awesome, yet, because a lot of gamers are only one step ahead of a vegetable, only gaining stimulus from Call of Duty, they never sell very well'

Other memebers of this club, are Okami, Ico, and Beyond Good & Evil.

Brilliant games, not at all overrated.

Places like the escapist are a haven for the appreciation of games like those above.

Overrated.

Any developer that forgoes performance for artsy bullshit is an idiot. There is no reason for a console game to ever, ever suffer from such abysmal frame rates as Shadow of the Colossus.

Cool idea. Awful execution.

I loved Shadow of the Colossus. I thought it was an amazing game and played it several times straight through (though after the 1st time playing and the "wow!" wore off, and I knew how to kill all the colossi, it wasn't as fun. Really loved the first time though.)
Still play it from time to time just because it's hard not to feel bad ass when you're playing it, and the minimalistic world (with no enemies or monsters, just the colossi) made a really effective contrast with the enormity of some of the enemies you ended up battling.

Did we play a different game? Because my copy played wonderfully.

SotC is superb. It genuinely surprises me that anyone without severe brain damage would think of it as overrated.

The game was really held back by the PS2 graphics capabilities. It did chug a lot when I played.

Those were probably THE best graphics on the PS2 ever, especially with the massive landscapes. If you'd rather have a consistent framerate but with a layer of fog always in front of you, good for you. I'll take the epic scenery.

Maybe so, but it in no way affected how enjoyable the game was.

I never suffered any framerate loss at any point in that game, my game ran smooth as silk, start to finish, never so much as dipping no matter what was on the screen.

There may have been something wrong with your copy, or your PS2.

I will place my vote on the 'Amazing' pile.

It has a lot of flaws I think, but the experience is so remarkable that I found it hard to care about them.

I agree. The majesty of the environment is worth the reduced framerate. Besides, better an adjusting, slower framerate than massive, game-crippling lag.

game was great and soemtimes i ask myself if the limits of the ps2 made the game better. like yeah you had this huge world, but it was almost completly barren. but becaue it was os barren the world did feel like a mythical place. the animations were great, the collosi were amazing and looked great.

I thought it was great really. Like psychonauts, great game, nice different graphics, and a story you can get involved in that doesnt push in your face. Plus the challenge was good (though maybe a bit rough for certain bosses).

Yep it had massive FPS drops but ill also take the scenery over performance any day, also dont put all the fault in the PS2 hardware i remember Jak3 having the same expansive enviroments and running a lot smoother, but SOTC is a MASTERPIECE nonetheless

Haha I was literally just playing it before I came online.

It's amazing, probably one of my favorite games

Team Ico are masters of creating a truly superb game experience.

Hmm, it seems there's a divide between people with framerate loss and those without. Are some of you using later models of the PS2? Maybe they performed somewhat better...

It's also possible that some people just aren't noticing the framerate loss. I found it rather easy to miss between focusing on the landscape or massive colossi battles, and the occasional blur effect they used to mask the dip in framerate. (At least, that's what I suspect it was doing. Maybe they just thought it looked cool. Which it does.)

I am a COD person who also enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus, it does not matter that some people say that I have a brain that has been put in a microwave but I enjoy a good game no matter what it is. Also if there was a poll on the best boss fights nearly all of the Colossus would be on that list except the two small lion ones, they were nothing special compared to the others. The fifth one is my favorite.

i tried it i can see why people like it but the shitty camera was too much for me. i enjoy a challenge but not when the challenge is merely trying to see.
