Yes, i think that backwards compatability should come as a standard on all consoles. I don't see why It can be all that hard or dificult to just integrate a console to not run as hard and just play an old game. What really pisses me off is Sony, they have some consoles that do have the backwards compatability and others that don't. The sad part is, many of the good games for all three of the consols had many good games for their lesser generations and cannot be played by their modern consols.

So my fellow escapists, should backwards Compatability be a standard or a premium and explain why/why not.

YES...if you can't play a game that you love on a new console, then you should boycott the console.

It doesen't kill a console not to have it, but it's a great idea and I would really like to see companies in the present and future utilize it.

Hells yeah. The fact I can't play Xbox games on my 360 without downloading some patch thingy irritates me to no end...

Yes, because it would help encourage people to buy the newer consoles. If they've wanted one or two games from an older one, and could play them on the newer ones with games being developed for it then I would imagine there would be more sales.

It should, but as the technology advances, I don't see how console makers can make every game, for every system they've made work on a next-gen platform.

should it be standard? sure! will it, probably not. if companies can charge a premium for old content, be it as a soft/hardware update or buying a virtual copy, and people will pay it, they will be disinclined to offer the service free, unless this is a large selling point of the thing in the first place.

though i think that it's very important, i think thats a little bit of an exxageration, but how far should it go back should you be able to play the NES on the wii, not including the virtual console

I also think that game companies should blow me, but that doesn't mean they should. It may be just a bit of work, but fuck off. It's still work. You can't force a company to do anything for you.

In other words, no, it should not be standard.

That's hardly an issue though, I mean you've obviously got an internet connection otherwise you wouldn't be posting in this thread (unless you're one of those freaky people I saw in Heroes who can access the internet via telepathy, but who would want to play X-Box games if they could do that?).

It's a tiny download, and you can download it from here [http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/backwardscompatibility.htm], burn it to a disc and then put it on your 360.
You can even order the disc by mail if you don't have a CD/DVD burner.

I think you can class Backward Compatability on the 360 as standard.

Nah. Sony did it right. Give it to the player at the start of the console's life, that way your previous console's library can support the fledgling console. Then when your new console has its own feet to stand on you can remove the hardware to cut down manufacturing costs.

Of course it should be standard. There are some great games that are on the older consoles that would be a tragedy if we couldn't play them after we get the new console without still having our old console sitting there.

In cases where there's enough power on the new console to implement backwards compatibility entirely in software, yes the new console should have BC. Having a ton of plastic boxes and even more cables around is infuriating.

But the first thing I'd like fixed (obviously not going to happen) is current compatibility. Many great 360 and Wii titles are region locked to Japan, and I don't feel like importing heavy and expensive hardware especially when it is notorious for breaking. The PS3 isn't compatible with my displays, thanks to Sony's retarded decision to force HDCP always on.

I would of course say yes they should to that. But I'm trying to think of reasons why it would not be a good idea and am not really coming up with anything I can think of at the top of my head.
