I'm not really a social media guy, but I'm thinking about joining twitter. Not really to send stuff, but just to see all these hilarious tweets everyone else seems to get. So should I even bother joining it? And just to clarify, I thought Facebook was stupid, but I joined it and really like it.

Eh.

I only use twitter to follow a few people, namely, George Takei and whoever is making the latest game I'm interested in. Takei is hilarious, and even though most developer/publisher tweets are vague or useless, sometimes there's interesting stuff in there.

As for my friends, no deal. Either they don't use twitter or any actually interesting information is drowned out by the sea of inanity and one-sided conversations I can't be bothered to track down. If I want to say something or get in touch with them, I'll give them a text or a call, and they usually do the same for me.

So, I guess I'd say go for it if you already know or know of a few people you want to follow. Otherwise, not worth the effort.

Not worth it, and I still think Facebook is stupid, so to each their own, I guess.

I manage my workplace's Twitter account. It's good for blatant self-promotion, but that's about it.

I've got Twitter. I don't post anything, I just follow several people. Not as much any more, too. It's just...mostly boring, to be honest - if you like reading status updates on Facebook, then go on ahead, but I'm not a huge fan, hence why I stopped using Fb. I occasionally go to Twitter, when I have to kill a couple of minutes or something, say, if I'm on the toilet and there is nothing better to do but it's your choice - go, try it, it's free - if you don't like it, don't use it, otherwise - go on. Can't really offer better advice than that.

I like the Twitter. I can rant and stuff and a couple of people sometimes respond which is cool. And I can promote my reviews, which I suppose is a good thing. And, for your purpose, it works well.

It's pretty handy to keep up with game updates and similar kind of news. I wouldn't know anything about "hilarious tweets", though.

Are you a celebrity whose fanbase longs to hear your every thought as you wait in grocery lines? Or part of a company whose PR strategy demands maximum visibility in every corner of social media?

If not, then please, God, no. That's not enough characters to say something smart, and plenty to say something stupid. Enough of us are connected at the hip to our cell phones 24/7 as it is.

No. you cant say anything worth the time to type it in so little characters, noone cares about what you ate fro breakfast or at what time you woke up, and the only reason twitter can be usef good is to trick stupid high end execs into saying stupid stuff, and that gets posted on escapist anyway.

I only have one so I can enter contests I have no chance of winning. Even if I don't use it much anymore, I find that Facebook is a more fulfilling social media site, if you use it right. It's all up to you in the end.

5 years later, I say this guy's take on it is still relevant:

I'm not a social media guy either... which is why I maintain a google+ account. Very valid excuse not to use any of the others.

I woke up at 7:30 today. How crazy is that?! #WOKEUP

Yeah, I agree with this. Twitter is the idea of taking a social network site and removing the beauty of actually being able to speak in full sentences which encourages the use of words like LOL and ROFL. Words that I seriously loathe...

Twitter seems pretty dumb to me, but I'm a fairly private person. I picked "Eh, whatever you're into", because different strokes for different folks.

Better stay away from it, pretty damn worthless for almost anyone except attention whores.

I did pick "whatever you're into" though.

It depends on what you want from it. Personally I don't use it at all for social media, I only use it for collecting news. If you don't 'follow' stuff that doesn't interest you, it doesn't show up in your feed. I follow a bunch of science news outlets, a whole swathe of gaming news sites/game developers, record labels, specific artists and a few more.

I use it as an RSS Feed, and it's fantastic for that purpose. All the news you care about, all in one place.

Of course, the more you follow the more you have to keep up with. I have the luxury of having absolutely Nothing to do while on break/lunch at work, so I have time to browse through it.

Also, even if your friends add you to their list, you don't have to add them to yours; you'll only get the news you Want, and stuff from other users that involves those same topics. Just be smart with what you subscribe to and the results will be glorious.

Of course, if you don't care about gathering information (I sure do) then I wouldn't recommend it.

It's nice to read funny shit from funny people but honestly unless you are a humor master or have a circle of friends into it it's not worth posting.

You know guys, it really helps to read the OP first.

I know you probably wanted to get in the "cool not-caring" snark, but read the first post.

Not really to send stuff, but just to see all these hilarious tweets everyone else seems to get

Hey OP, I would join. I've got one, and I've sent maybe 4 tweets total. Just questions to people I follow.

It's a handy way to keep up with stuff that interests you, and you can pick and choose what shows up. I've never seen anything from any of the "attention whores" people in this thread are blathering about. I just follow a bunch of sports writers/bloggers and World News type of stuff

It's like the guy above me said, a shortened RSS feed

I did read the opening post, and even if one actually maintains their stance on not posting it doesn't change my opinion that 140 characters rarely gets across anything much more profound than a bumper sticker, nor that frequently checking on Twitter feeds is one more way to get excessively attached to your cell phone to the detriment of what's actually going on around you.

I suppose the one other exception I should mention is that if one is travelling abroad in places that might be dangerous, Twitter has proven to be a good way to let other people know your status and alert them if you get into trouble.

I generally find Twitter and the short-attention-span culture that surrounds it deeply inane. Your Mileage May Vary, and that's fine. Doesn't dismiss or change my opinion.
