I've decided that I want to get one of these games but I can't decide which. So which does the escapist community think is better and why?

P.S. I apologise If this should go in the advise section, I wasn't sure.

Demon's Souls. It'll give you the basic skills for beating Dark Souls.

Also, It's awesome and the servers close sometime in 2012.

Also also, Welcome to the Escapist my friend! Stay away from the basement and whats-his-name.

Personally, I think Dark Souls is a much funner game than Demon's Souls.

It just feels more polished and combat feels far more satisfying.

What? Dark Souls, while not a direct sequel, is a very similar game hailed as Demon's Souls' spiritual successor. This is not a difficult question; you get the first game first, then the second. That's generally how things should work. So get Demon's Souls, then get Dark Souls. They're both awesome, and Demon's Souls is in no way outdated.

I haven't played much of Demon's Souls because I don't own a PS3, but from what I've played; Dark Souls seems better.

Get Demon's Souls for $20 and wait for Dark Souls to come down in price since eventually you'll want both anyways.

On the one hand, you really don't need it.

On the other hand, watching how other people died is sometimes helpful and sometimes halarious.

Before you play demon's souls tho... you should practice and see if you have the nerve.

Play some Mega Man 2. Shit's nintendo hard, you're going to need patience.

Certain bosses you don't want to take on by yourself, seriously!

It's not absolutely necessary, but the slogan "Prepare To Die" will ring very true if you don't play online.

Well, while the online portion of Demon's Souls is still going, I'd bet that a lot of people have simply moved onto Dark Souls, so you'd probably not get the most out of it.

The online is essentially the same for both games, Dark Souls has covenents that you can join that promote certain aspects of online play.

Want to assist someone rather than fight them? There's a covenent for that. Want to invade other player's worlds and kill them? There's a covenent for that. Want to invade the worlds of players who invade other player's worlds to kill them, so that you can smite them with righteous vengence? There's a covenent for that.

Seeing as Demon's souls seems to be mainly a single player game with a few multiplayer elements will it be damaged much when the servers close?

Demon's Souls servers will probably be shut down some time before Dark Souls so...I'd say Dark Souls.

HOWEVER.

If you want to play a great game and support a FANTASTIC company PLEASE buy Demon's Souls NEW.
It's only 20USD and you'll get your moneys worth.

Honestly? No.

I only got the game last January, so the multiplayer wasn't as active as Dark Souls is now, and it was still a great game.

Demon's Souls would be a safer bet for you. If you like it, it's a given that you'll like Dark Souls.

Sort of, but not really.

Also, saying "get the first game and then the second" is a bit silly, because demon's souls and Dark souls are basically connected in the same way Zelda games are. Similar themes, gameplay and concepts but no real story connection or anything. I'd vote dark souls because it does just seem more polished and as though more effort went into it.

Nice, 6/6 even vote. For what it's worth, don't worry so much about getting the wrong one. Think of it as "there is no wrong choice."

I completed Demon's Souls pretty much without ever going online. Think it was during the psn hack crisis... anyway, the online part is interesting but no way integral.
