So, as I was planning on buying a couple games soon. After I put the ones I was going to buy into the Amazon cart (Persona 3 FES and Deadly Premonition, BTW), I noticed that I still had 30 bucks left. It also turns out that Red Dead Redemption (a game I have been wanting for a while) was 30, but NIER (a game of which I am curious and have heard many good things about) was also 30 bucks. So, I am at a dilemma: Which should I get, NIER, Red Dead Redemption, or something else? What do you think?

EDIT: Hm... It seems the poll is broken, and I cannot fix it. Hate it when that happens.

EDIT2: Ah, their we go, everything is working again.

RDR is worth your money, although I've never played Nier so that may be good too.

Cowboys are awesome...

I've only rented Red Dead Redemption, but I'd go with that. You can get hour after hour after hour of stuff to do in it.
I didn't like it much myself, but most other people did. The odds suggest you'll probably enjoy it too.

From what I hear, NIER is one of those games which has a good story and likeable and unique characters, but is unfortunately marred by shoddy gameplay and sub-par graphics...

I've played Red Dead, and its definitely worth getting, and I certainly didn't get bored of it for a very, very long time...
Plus you can get zombies. Whats not to love?

So yeah, my vote, Red Dead :3

I definitely preferred RDR out of the two. It's basically a spaghetti Western in video game form. If you've ever watched a John Wayne movie and said "I wish I was there", you'll love RDR.

They're both good games, but Red Dead Redemption wins handily IMO.

RDR!
Why do you are even asking? Im my opinion it's this:
Awesome Western Setting > Generic medieval JRPG Setting

I'd recommend Red Dead Redemption. It's one of my favourite games, and has some pretty entertaining multiplayer (even moreso if you've got friends to play with). I haven't played Nier, but it's received fairly mixed reviews, ranging from absolute shit, to mediocre, whereas RDR has received more overly positive reviews than mediocre.

Plus, there's more bang for your buck, as there's tons to do in the single-player alone. I don't know how anyone could find it boring...

Red Dead requires time. It's not a constant series of action levels, though you can pretty much start a shoot out at any time you wish.

RDR was boring to me.

I gave Nier my game of the year.

So yeah, that's my pick
Hee hee, i'm so glad somebody agrees with me on both accounts! ^_^

Okay, gushing over, my vote goes to NIER.

Unlike a lot of people, i really enjoyed it. The characters were wonderfully endearing (Nier himself and Grimoire Weiss totally stole the show) and the world itself just felt so... i don't know. Alive? It felt like a real world, rather than the hollow corridors and empty space of other typical RPG games. Looking at you, Final Fantasy 13. I remember one town, a port town, and it's actually.... you know, a town. It's big. It has shops. It has people. It feels alive. The game has so much character and personality. One town that really stuck in my head was the one where the inhabitants live by a set of rules. Hundreds of rules. It can range from something like "don't stop to talk to strangers" to "don't sell anything to anyone who hasn't danced five times and shake both their hands". It's quirky, it's original, it has personality. I loved the music (especially the 'overworld' when travelling between destinations) and i actually found the combat to be enjoyable, mixing up magic and melee and having it real time action based as opposed to pressing a command on a menu turn-based style. The main quest takes inspiration from various titles. One section could have you solving puzzles zelda-style, the next has you fighting a boss God of War style, and the next room could have you weaving between energy balls in a top-down view similar to some sort of side-scrolling shooter.

I found Red Dead Redemption to be woefully boring. The world is nothing but one big shade of khaki. It's to be expected. You are, for the most part, in the desert. There is no variation in transport. It's not like GTA where you could go from saloon to coupé to supercar. It's just horses. Nothing but horses. Or a wagon, if you use the taxi system. But at the end of the day, it's nothing but horses and that gets boring. Fast. It's a chore to traverse anywhere. I will say something in its favour, the little touches are what make the game interesting. From hunting animals, to scrounging for herbs, to playing poker, to random encounter events and side missions. That's what makes the game. The story is... well, it's alright. Not entirely my cup of tea, i'm not big on westerns. Marston felt a little bit too cookie cutter for my liking. (guy has a naughty past, guy goes to make things right. The damned-seeking-redemption story has been utterly done to death. "I'm a badass gunslinger but at the end of the day i just want to sit with my family around the fireplace".) Maybe i need the hustle and bustle that the cities of GTA provide for me to remain engaged... i don't know. All i know is that i didn't even make it to Mexico before i became rather tired with the game. A few quirky characters like the travelling salesman do not make up for the otherwise dull world in which i found myself.

But that's just me. You may agree with the others and find NIER to be sub-standard, poorly crafted, and for Read Dead Redemption to have an engaging story and exciting gameplay.

RDR by a long shot, especially if you play multiplayer as there is superb DLC for it, not to mention Undead Nightmare.

I would like to think NEIR because well, its a SE title that isnt their atypical offering and I would say that is the best way to reward SE by paying them for better efforts than most of what they have been putting out.

However simple economics would say RDR simply because you will get more content hours out of it easily than NEIR.

I'm not a fan of RDR, but most people seem to adore it. From what I've heard nier is pretty meh, so do with that what you will.

As an alternative, buy Enslaved odyssey to the west!

You guys should really only be giving a recommendation if you've played BOTH games, and can give a clear reason why one is better than the other. I've played both, and while RDR had great moments, it doesn't compare to Nier. It's quite sad to see so many people who would vote RDR, just because Nier is "different" or "a typical JRPG" or some other stupid tripe.

Red Deads always a good'un. I got it and didn't really put it down until I completed the story, got 100% with all the side things, and played a dozen hours online. Just before christmas I lent it to my mate and he ended up doing exactly the same as well as buying the undead pack!
