Everyone should know by now that Halo Wars came out and that it was supposed to make console based RTS's a reality. However, personally after playing it I wish they would have just made it for the computer rather than limit you to such extremes to make it playable on a limited button console system. Lack of grouping, setting waypoints, small number of troops, limited buildings...list goes on. However I'm a PC loyalist and so I'm wondering if everyone else feels as I do or if they think Console RTS's are a good Idea. Anyone care to say?

Edit:
Well it sounds like people have only a slightly varying, but I would like to address the one point brought up. Do you think its possible to make intuitive enough controls to make a console RTS able to be feasible in features to a PC? I mean if they were able to give you control groups (not just splitting your squad automatically, that hardly counts) and could get past limited tech tree's could they be good? Of course micro management is impossible to the level it is on the PC but games like Total Annihilation (If your an RTS fan you should know what that is, if not google it) managed to have minimal mirco management without having to dumb down everything. So is it possible to make an intuitive control scheme to run a console RTS?

i love RTSs, they're my favorite genre, but i don't think that Halo Wars was to bad. i agree, that lack of control groups, limited army size and all that are detremental to the game, it's okay for what it is, though much could be improved.
unfortunatly this is Ensemble studios' swansong, so expect no dlc from them, or probably at all. or a pc port

I personally wouldn't ever even think of buying a console RTS, but I don't see why they can't make it. Halo Wars and other console RTS's seems to have sold well enough, even if it was mostly on the name.

I just think that analog sticks will never have the precision of a mouse, so RTS games (especially fast clicking ones like starcraft) will never work well on a console. That and what everyone else said about grouping etc.

most RTS games work MUCH better on the PC then consoles

however, if the controls on the console version are good enough, then sure i think it would be acceptable. (for example, the paintbrush unit control in halo wars)

I dunno, Halo Wars is pretty fun multiplayer. I realize the idea of making a casual or easy to play RTS bugs people, but being able to just slam together a random assortment of units and just throw them at each other is proving to be fun.

Look at it this way, now they'll upgrade to more complex games and you'll get more RTS games as a consequence.

I don't understand why people say that RTS games should just stay on PCs. I myself am a console gamer, but I enjoy the odd RTS game if it's done well. I don't see why console gamers should be starved of a particular genre of game just because someone has the opinion that it would work better on a PC. Just enjoy games for what they are: a bit of fun.

On another note, I think Halo Wars was done quite well. The RTS genre has always presented a challenge in terms of the controls for consoles, but this game is pretty close to how I'd like console RTS's to handle. Sure it's not perfect, but nobody expected it to be. I'd recommend this game if you're a fan of the RTS genre, though if you're just a fan of the halo series it may not be for you.

I've played halo wars, and personally, I thinks its one of the worst RTSs ive ever play. It doesn't have any of the in-depth strategy that most RTSs have, and the lack of groups really got on my nerves.

Halo Wars is the best console RTS ever made, but I have to say I need more complex, PC RTSs in order to be satisfied. And by "more complex" I mean "requires more than 3 buttons". PC instantly wins.

And the title of "Best Console RTS Ever" isn't really much because of all the other ones which suck.

TOO MANY QUOTES

EDIT: The annoying thing about Halo Wars is that it's hard to select just 2 squads or just 2 guys. DoW(1) is by far my favorite RTS.

Not at all, and the reason I say that is that although efforts so far have been poor, I'll never forget how bad Starcraft 64 was to play, we cannot dismiss the idea that a developer may stumble upon a method that works.

Personally, I think the Kingdom Under Fire series is touching at the edge of the answer. Imagine, let's say a Total War style RTS, you control your general in third person but can issue commands through context sensitive commands. For example on 360 I look at a unit of mine, press A to select them, then A again to order them to move. Select an enemy unit while still on your own unit, hit the right bumper and your unit flanks them to the right.

The controls just need to be more intuitive, and to satisfy the stereotypical console players you should be able to personally control your general, getting stuck in to turn the tide of the battle. But it would take a lot of thorough design and playtesting before it was turned out to the world, using new people to playtest towards the end who aren't familiar with the controls to see if they work, I think that's a big issue as well, people who played the controls for a year saying they work...

halo wars is the best rts ever
i'm afraid i must take issue with this statement. Wars was made on the OC, there would be twice as many levels, more units, and maybe even a create-a-hero function, as well as the possibility of having the Flood as a playable race (but probably not)

to make it realy work on 360, it has to be quite dumbed down for the hardware. what other RTSs have you played that makes you say this? Age2? Sins? Warcraft 3? SupCom? DoW? all of these are imesurably better than Halo Wars

No. Why should a genre be limited to just one system because of a minor control issue?

i say that Wars works well as a Console RTS! i merely posit that it could be better on the PC, because you could do more with the concept

Any restrictions of any games to any console is a load of bullshy to me. Why should players be penalised for their console choice? I am a PC gamer, so should I no longer be able to play driving games? Should I lose the chance to play (and admittedly, this happens once in a blue moon) a sports game? Should my mates lose all FPS's (because, admit it, FPS's work better with kb/mouse) because they have consoles?

NO.

Vote for me and I'll promote game releases on all platforms. EQUALITY FOR GAMERS!

Halo wars isn't a real RTS game anything on the console isn't a real game, like Halo isn't a real fps.
For certain games you just need a mouse, not a controller, like a fps or rts.
those idoits can shove their analog stick where the sun, (giant bright ball of fire in sky.) doesn't shine, like in your living room.
