This crossed my mine with the PS3 hacks and used game debate recently. Should you have the right to do whatever you want to a product once you buy it?

I say yes. You payed the money, now you have ownership of it. Of course, pirating or duplicating that product for money isn't exactly legal, so there is a few exceptions.

Edit: Ok, people lets not take this discussion to the extreme and bring killing into it.

I guess you should be able to do whatever with it, i mean you bought it after all... Besides the Kinect hacks have been enough to make me slightly interested in that thing... Until i see Kinect Horse Adventures or whatever other mindless drivel that comes out for it.

Once you don't make money off it, I think it's fair that you are allowed to whatever you want with a product once you buy it. In the case of some products, it's not really fair to use them to make money for yourself by copying the product and selling the copy on...

that's not a 100% true, a construction entrepreneur (sorry if it's not spelled right, I'm not english) can buy 1000 bricks, and he uses it to build houses to make profit
I'd say that the only things you shouldn't make profit with is those that are free

I said yes, with a few exceptions. The iPhone 'jailbreaking' thing recently is what I have in mind as I type this. If you can get your product to do more than the designer did, good for you! Of course, it's then perfectly valid for the manufacturer to pull any warranties and/or tech support from you and if you're using your modifications for illegal purposes that's another story entirely.

As long as what your doing does not involve...

1)Causing harm physically or mentally to others around you.

2)Whatever your doing does not allow you to gain or distribute materials for free that otherwise would not be.

Outside of those two things what you do with your own personal copy of something is your business. A company has no reason to cover you through warranties however.

Depends: You own a shotgun, that doesn't mean you can kill someone with it.
Because killing someone is on par with hacking a phone.
Except the question was "Do you have the right to do whatever you want with your property"

To which he answered" No, you can't kill people."

The question was not "Should you be allowed to hack your phone"

He was not saying hacking a phone is the same as murder.

Pay attention, its not that hard.

This is why my mobile phone is currently acting as a coaster.
I'm guessing that particular function didn't get approved by the App Store? I've been working on a paperweight app for a few days now, hope it gets approved.

Yes, within reason. So I guess actually no, you shouldn't be able to do anything with a product. Although that mainly falls into "not killing someone with it" or something similar. Beyond that sure, do what you want with it. Just don't expect the makers of the product to just accept it.

Within the realm of morals and law, yes.

If I buy a toothbrush, I should damn well be able to stick it up my ass!

Ow.
But, yes, with exceptions, say I buy DCUO and say "Hey! I want to have an electric powerset." and then mod the game to get one. That is not right, and unfair to others playing the game.

I'm fully aware of what the question was. I'm not quite senile yet.

For those of us not so fortunate, actually take a look at the top of the page. The question is (at the time of writing): "Should you be able to do whatever you want with a product once you buy it?"
The question is not exclusive to legal rights, and relates to the moral and definitive implications of personal ownership.
