so the other day i found a small jar full of pennies, and (because i was very bored) i decided to get every penny in it and glew them all together to make a stick of pennies
well i had about 45 or so glewed together and my friend and his girlfriend came over to my house and she saw what i had done with all those pennies and started scolding me for wasting money, and my thought was that theyre just pennies and that i wasnt wasting much of anything
so we got into an argument about this and when it ended i was left wondering if most other people think this way too and decided to ask you people here

so the point is, do you think that small change (i.e. a penny) is or isnt worth saving?

EDIT: okay, i think i might need to clear some things up for some people, i am 22 so it isnt like im a small child that should be happy with whatever money comes his way, i have a very well paying job, and i dont even use American currency...

Well first off, your poll is a bit confusing to me, the words just dont seems to be worded right so i advise you to fix that.

But a small change such as yours doesnt really matter. You spent less then a dollar to make something that is so worth more then a dollar. What i mean is I'd pay you $2 for that stack of pennies just because thats an awsome idea.

But if it was like $5 worth of money that would be a bit of a waste, however it wasnt, so it doesnt matter.

I think that it is worth saving. I did the same thing not too long ago and at first it may seem like it isn't that much but it'll soon grow to a large amount. People just throw change away because they think that it is worthless, but you can benefit from it. Basically I'm saying that you should save the money even if it's a penny.

Actually, it's better to melt a penny down and sell the metal, if that were legal. I'm serious. A penny is now literally not worth the metal it's made from.

If you would pay 45 cents for that sculpture, then I'd say it's worth it. Reminds me of a FoxTrot strip.
Marcus: So how was your thanksgiving?
Jason: Not bad. I bet Peter a quarter that I could eat more helpings of turkey than him.
Marcus: Wow, really? Did you win?
Jason: No. I ate my usual two helpings and called it quits. Peter went on for 15, and going.
Andy (away): Peter, if it hurts that much, you really need to lie down...
Jason: Who says entertainment has to be expensive?

I keep all the change I get.

All the bigger stuff (anything 10p and above) gets spent on a day-to-day basis, and all the small stuff (coppers and 5p pieces) gets put into tins and saved for years. I cashed in my pennies recently to the tune of £36, which felt pretty damn good.

Gluing money together for shits and giggles is just plain silly, even if its pennies. Forty-five pennies is almost just right for putting in a sleeve and depositing in your savings account.

Thats a good woman, scolding you for outright WASTE.

If you ever skimp on any holiday gift to her due to not having much money, you deserve the consequences, and you'll never live it down.

the pole is confusing, but yes i agree with you, small amounts of money aint worth noting, i don't turn in my empty cans and bottles i just put them in the recycle container and i usually just leave small change when shopping (please stop with the fucking XX.99 already!).

also she sounds like a mean person, getting all worked up over you gluing together 45 cents, honestly you probably had more fun doing that than any other thing you could have done with that kind of money.

Sure is.

A thousand 25 pence coins is a lot of money and whilst a thousand pound coins would be worth a lot more, I don't chuck away money.

every bit of change can help.

Pennies are different, because I think they cost $0.012 or slightly above a penny to make. So we're making them at a loss, and most people never use them. I think a lot of the things with american coins could be changed around (horrible pun) to take pennies out of the matter.

But change itself is still money, and I use it in a jar and cash it in when its near the top. It's usually around $50-60 when I cash it in- and I usually use it for a game or dinner with the girlfriend.

Most of my change goes in the coffee machine at work, got a collection of £2 coins though, got about 200 of them now. Thinking about it, thats quite a lot of money to have just sitting round in a large jar :-/

To quote the ancient phrase: "look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves". I always thought it was a stupid meaningless phrase until I started throwing all my 1p, 2p and 5p coins in a jar and ended up with nearly £30 in less than a year.

A handful of pennies could be the difference between having a meal and going hungry if you're desperate, wasting them just doesn't make any logical sense.

oh come on, im not even sure it was forty five, that was just a guess, also i know it was silly and it was just for shits n giggles, and besides i dont even use pennies... (what with being in the UK and all)

and as for the savings account thing and not having money at a later time because i wasted it, i make a rather large amount of money at my work (not so much that im a rich bastard but still more than any average job...) so i just really cant see any point in keeping those pennys around to use what they were meant for...

Considering at college you can find at least £20 worth of change lying around each day, id say yeah, pick it up/keep it in your pocket and save it. I collect all my change and put it into money bags which then get taken to the bank and added to my account. As they say "every penny helps".
