Simple question for you beautiful, beautiful people: With the new Smash out in Japan, and the rest of the world salivating at it's impending worldwide release, I must ask: Which version do you intend to buy?

And just as importantly, WHY are you buying that version? Does the portability of the 3DS version appeal to you? Do you insist on the better graphics and more controller options of the Wii U version? Or is it as simple as "I own (X) but not (Y), so I HAVE to buy this version!". Is the staggered release date of the two versions impacting your decision at all? How many of you intend to buy both versions for completeness sake?

Personally, I'm going 3DS on this one... mostly because I don't OWN a Wii U. If I did... yeah, I'd probably get the console version. But I'm not crying, the 3DS version looks MORE than acceptable, and I've been more of a handheld gamer recently anyways, so I'll certainly survive.

WiiU, no question. The reason that I play Smash Brothers is for local multiplayer, and that's just not as feasible on a handheld (nor as fun, in my opinion). Not to mention that I don't think I would like how it would control on the 3DS very much, although I freely admit that may not be valid considering I haven't actually played any version yet.

Both. I will play the Wii U version over the 3DS version whenever I can, but having a portable version of the game with be super convenient for me. Plus, you know, dat release gap.

both. i have the 3DS demo now, and is super fun even with only 5 characters and my L/R buttons needing replacement. the club nintendo music CD bonus for getting both sweetens the deal. there seems to be potential for data transfer between the 3DS and Wii U, so maybe coins or other unlockables are shared?

I'm double dipping on this one. I'm getting it both on the Wii U as well as the 3DS. I'm just glad to finally have Wii U games to give a damn about because this drought has been particularly bad. Not to mention the ability to get the official soundtrack is nice as well, seeing as Japan has a problem with both a) releasing them outside of Japan and b) reasonably pricing them.

I was planning on getting both but focusing on the Wii U version...but then I got the 3DS demo...and I've been playing that for hours...I've never spent THIS much time on a demo before so I'm probably going to have to fake my death once 3DS comes out and maybe by X-Mas of 2015 I'll have gotten tired of one or both versions. I'm probably going to get a new 3DS too once those come out stateside but I can't pretend it's going to be a portable smash machine.

WiiU, dat yummy big ass HDTV version without the need to buy extra accessories to use Amiibo, plus have you seen all the 3DS analog sticks Smash has destroyed? There's just no contest!

Capcha: "I'm yours", good to know you've learned your place, capcha.

3DS version is pre-ordered and paid for, and I'll be getting the Wii U bundle that includes the gamecube controller adapter once I have spending money again.

3DS for on-the-go and when I just want to play for a few minutes, Wii U for when friends come over. And the adapter is 100% nessesary for me. Gamecube controller is my favorite ever; hopefully they'll add support for other games.

I'm spending $140 on essentially one game, and I'm 100% okay with that. I love Smash.

Both at some point. I actually have a 3DS so I'm getting that one. Don't have a WiiU but no telling what the future might bring.

I'm getting the WiiU version for local multiplayer. That way I can play with my partner and other friends that don't have a 3DS. Fighting games are one of those genres that I only find really fun when I'm playing with people around me.

Both of course! The 3DS version will be one of my go to games to take with me when I'm out and about. And the Wii U one will certainly get a lot of attention once it comes out, and most likely be the preferred version what with the better control scheme, visuals, larger sound track, probably more stages etc.

Like others have said, definitely both. The Wiiu for friendly get-togethers, 3DS for convention hotel stays.
Also, gotta get dat club nintendo soundtrack.

Neither. And I'm in here to see the reasons why. See if anyone brings up something new I don't know.

Why? Because I can't buy Nintendo products anymore without seeing what it looks like, and read some reviews after completion. It looks average aesthetically from what I've seen so far, and I'm waiting to see if they throw in the air side dash back in again.

I know I'm getting the 3DS version launch day, but I won't get the Wii U version until a bit later. Probably a couple months after release. I have a couple friends who are getting the Wii U version, and if I go to any local tournaments, I'm sure I'll be able to adapt. They are essentially the same game, after all. I will get my time in on the Wii U version, though.

So yeah, probably both.

If I get one at all it will be the WiiU version as I really dont like playing on mobile devices much and as such dont actually own a 3DS.

If it has decent netcode I will consider it but I will have to buy a network adaptor for the WiiU as I dont like gaming wireless if at all possible the experience can be rough enough wired as it is. I skipped brawl but played melee a fair bit back in the day however I dont like single player in these games and getting 3 friends to come over for a local gaming session isnt easy anymore but if my one other friend who owns a WiiU buys it I probably will to. Trouble is he doesnt like fighting games so whether this deviates enough from the traditional mould for him to enjoy is debatable.

So WiiU version or bust for me and it will be my first game made by Nintendo for the console lol although I still plan on getting Super Mario 3D World when its at a reasonable price.

I'm getting it only for the WiiU since I don't own a DS of any kind.

I'm going to advertise a bit here :D
There's a user group here on the Escapist called "WiiU Online Multiplayer"
When Smash is released on the WiiU and everyone's played a bit of it we are going to have an Escapist Smash Tournament. Or at least try to have. So get your buts over there and join the group :)

Of course there will be a thread about it closer to release but that's one thing to look forward to :D

I'll be getting both, as I currently only have a 3DS at the moment, and the 3DS version comes out first, so I'll be able to get my smash fix earlier than if I waited for the Wii U version. I'll definitely be picking up a Wii U before the Wii U version comes out though, so then I can enjoy the console version as well and give my circle pad a break(provided it isn't already broken by then).
