So in the time I've been here, I've heard a few people comment on the lack of a game set during World War 1. The obvious answer to this is that a game in which you crouch in a muddy trench taking pot shots at some guys 100 yards away in another trench before charging straight into the teeth of a machine gun emplacement and dying is not a very fun game. I think I may have found a way around this: Madden.
Yes, the same poster child for unoriginal gameplay and EA price gouging. Imagine this. You play as a young officer on the Allied side (just to shake things up, let's make him British). Between advances, you manage your troops the best you can with limited supplies and dwindling reinforcements. When it's announced that another charge is going to happen, you decide what sort of tactics (read plays) you're going to use and where to send each squad. Once the charge starts, you can control the officer directly, have him give orders to his squad, or jump to one of the sergeants and do the same with them.
So it's part shooter, part RTS, and uses controls like Madden.
My problem is that I'm too close to this, so I have no idea if anyone else would find it fun.
