So, I was in a bar for lunch and Plan B's song 'She Said' came on. One of the lines in it is:

'Got bigger than I ever could have planned
like that song by the Zutons, Valerie'

It made me smile that another song was referenced and I just wanted to know if people liked this and whether they had any other good examples.

Where is the "meh" option? I don't mind, per se, but it could be slightly annoying when you know the lyrics should mean more but you don't have the background to understand them.

So like...songception O____o.

Never actually heard any examples of it haha. But meh, I wouldn't say I like it. Tbh, the kinda music I listen to wouldn't do well in referencing other songs. Could only see it working for rap (and whatever the fuck Plan B is nowadays xD)

It kind of annoys me sometimes, because it feels like a cheap way of using someone else's fame to increase your own. Like "hey, remember that talented guy you like? I like him too! Like me please" But sometimes it seems fine to me. Depends on the song, and how well it's done. James Blunt does it in 'Stay the Night' too.

I know Bruce Springsteen gives a quick shout-out in Thunder Road: "Like a vision, she dances across the porch while the radio plays. Roy Orbison singing for the lonely, hey that's me and I want you only."

The first example that came to mind for me.

Electric Light Orchestra has a song called "Shangri-La", a song I have brought up quite a bit on this site before, the chorus reads as such:

My Shangri-La has gone away
Faded like the Beatles on 'Hey Jude'
She seem to drift out on the rain
That came in somewhere softly from the Blue

In that song it has a purpose, and it's a very sad purpose, but a lovely one.

Well yes, I listen to the Beatles and they commonly refer back to a previous piece of work.

There's some good ones:

"Beatle Bones 'N Smokin' Stones" - Captain Beefheart: "Strawberry Fields Forever" - The Beatles
"Absolutely Free" - Frank Zappa: "Mellow Yellow" - Donovan
"Speed King" - Deep Purple: "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Tutti Fruity" - Little Richard
"It" - Genesis: "It's Only Rock 'N Roll" - The Rolling Stones

The latest I've heard was Lil Wayne referring to Michael Jacksons song "Man In The Mirror" in his song "Mirror"

At about 02:24
