Whenever I check out any of my friend's movie collections, they're always put in alphabetical order. I find this very frustrating cause when I'm looking for a movie to watch, I generally know what type of movie I'm interested in, yet have to look at every single one of thier movies anyway. I've always sorted mine by genre. That way when I'm in the mood for a comedy, I only have to look through a tenth of my collection instead of the whole freakin' thing. Yet I seem to be the ONLY one to do so. Everyone else either sorts alphabeticly or has too few movies for it to even matter.

So am I the only one?

Mine are completely random. I don't own all that many movies so its pretty easy to keep track of them all.

Mine are alphabetical by genre.

Therefore I couldn't select one option because I use two. I am obsessive compulsive and have well over 500 DVDs so they are very well organized. I even have an Excel Spreadsheet for people who don't feel like looking through the actual DVD selection.

Mine are random, as long as they're all in neat rows with the text the right way up (I'm pretty OCD about that sort of thing) then I dont mind.

I dont have too many DVDs anyway so I can usually find what I want easily.

I keep my DVDs in big wallets (and recycle the packaging), so I have to keep them meticulously sorted. I find sorting by genre problematic because there are too many anomalies. I mean, Dr Strangelove is ostensibly a comedy, but it's also a war film and political drama. Solaris is set off-world, but it's not exactly hard sci-fi. And does The Seventh Seal have a genre all of its own? In fact, I'm starting to think that most films made pre-1977 can't be pigeonholed into genre.

Alphabetical is the only way for me.

I have well-over 600 movies on dvd alone, and I tend to watch maybe 10-15/week. With that much take-movie-down/put-movie-back I long ago abandoned trying to keep them sorted.
I try to keep certain sequels and movie-series in relative proximity of eachother to make them easier to find, but that's really as far as it goes.

Looks at the dvd.

Not really sorted except for the.
asian movies have their own shelves as have tv series. Other then that it is just where i have space i put them at only if it has sequels it are next to each other.

I have mine sorted alphabetically, though I do stress that this is while I had the space for them. I do have a random thing going on with the rest of those DVDs that haven't made it to the shelf yet, but that's beside the point (and with Xmas coming up, this will only get worse)

I am a nerdy sod though - I have a spreadsheet of my DVDs, with Genre, Actors, Director, year, run time and so forth, so you can sort them by each criteria, to find what you want, if you're in the mood for something slightly more specific.

I do my best to alphabetize when I do sort through them. Though they're usually just randomly stacked together.

I usually just alphabetize them though once I take them out I just put them near the end of the stack. Same with games though I do try to go by system.

I tend not to buy movies, spare my all time favorites, so, yeah, I don't really have enough to sort.

Mostly random, but big box sets (Star Wars, Jurassic park, the 4-disc LOTR ones) and crap movies go on the bottom shelf. TV shows, being just three seasons of The Office and Arrested Development, and blu-rays get middle shelf. Top shelf is for good movies.

Mine are are in numerical order. Whenever I get a new DVD, I place a sticker on the spine with a designated number and place that in a logbook. Its a good system really.
