I'm sure we've had these threads before (I think I may have even made one once) but we always have new blood coming in, so it doesn't hurt to have one now and then. I was wondering who amongst you actually likes sports. Now, I know I'm on a video game forum, and common logic (in the US anyway) is that nerds hate sports, but we're a pretty diverse bunch so I'm sure we will have a verity of opinions.

So three things I want you to answer, how do you feel about sports, whats your favorite sport, and what teams do you support?

I personally love sports. So long as I understand the rules, I can watch almost any sport and be amused, the one exception is basketball. I personally like baseball and American football the best ad considering they are in different parts of the year I consider them to be tied. Wrestling (real wrestling that is) is my second favorite sport. I'm also debating whether to start watching soccer.

The teams I support are the Seattle Mariners for baseball, the Seattle Seahawks for professional football and University of Oregon for college football.

So what about you guys?

I like playing sports. Watching them, not so much. Unless it's mixed martial arts, or boxing. Although I don't really follow either much at all (aside from the occasional UFC event). Kickboxing is actually my main hobby.

As far as non-violent sports go, I generally enjoy pretty much anything, just to a lesser extent. Hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball, pretty much anything that doesn't involve standing around for a long time (ie: baseball).

As far as favourite athletes (since I don't really follow team sports), I'd list Junior Dos Santos, Claude Patrick, and Carlos Condit among my favourites.

Give me any of the five major sports and I'll watch them if my team is involved. If my team is not involved, give me football or soccer. If it's a video game version of the sport, I will play the hell out of it (I currently own Madden 2011 and have 2013 pre-ordered, FIFA 2012, and MLB: The Show 11)

I am part of a few $100 fantasy football leagues so football is the one I know the most about. I am currently downloading a fantasy football podcast in anticipation for work tomorrow (since there's no Escapist podcast this week :(

As a Minnesotan, I am legally required to love The Vikings and have a burning hatred for the Packers. I like to watch the Twins, The Wild, and the Timberwolves try... (although Wild and Timberwolves have some interesting additions that might allow me to remove the paper bag over my head when I am watching them).

Soccer is the only sport where I don't have a home team. Due to the fact that ESPN is under the impression that Americans can't watch soccer, I've never grown an attachment for any particular team but love to watch Team USA and Germany.

Did you happen to catch the Twins series against the Mariners? I was surprised that the Twins played so tough considering their record.

While there's a few sports that I have almost no interest in either watching or playing (golf and baseball come immediately to mind), I generally do really enjoy sports. For the most part I'd rather be playing than watching, but spending an evening just watching a hockey game sounds great to me too.

Sports are the modern and humane form of gladiator arenas. What is there not to like? Sports are also awesome because they're probably one of the only fields that works strictly on merit.

Favorite Teams: Lakers, Broncos, Mariners, Yankees

Nonviolent? Really? Those are pretty violent. At least, hockey and soccer are.

On topic, though, I don't really watch much, and I don't play much. Not particularly good at sports, but you know, if a few friends are playing basketball I'll get in on it. I don't touch the ball that much, but I play.

I have a question. How can you be a fan of the Mariners and the Yankees? Do you just need some soul crushing depression to go wit 27 rings or what ever they have?

If it's not the Vikings, it's very rare that I catch a game unfortunately. The Twins, The Wild, and The Timberwolves all have a deal with FS North (cable channel for those of you unaware) and I do not have the money for cable. I do play as my home team in my video games...does that count?

Vikings I watch every Sunday (pay attention other sport teams!). I would love to get more into the other sports but providers just don't want to let me :(

Now all I have to do is wait to see if Ziggy (Vikings owner) actually gets us a MLS team...

Oh, that sucks, the M's have the same sort of thing with Root Sports. Luckily I have cable, so I don't really miss a game.

LOL! I get that question a lot, I liked both teams at different points then I decided that nothing was wrong with liking both. The Mariners during the Griffey years were pretty fun to watch. The Yankees because they always seem to have the most stacked team in the league and it's funny to watch how they just monopolize on baseball wins almost every year.

I hate the Yanks with every fiber of my being (It comes from being a Mariners fan during the 90s and early 2000s when there was a good rivalry going) and was in complete shock when the M's traded Ichiro to them.

The guys upstairs have been making bad moves with the Mariners personnel for as long as I can remember. Ichiro was the kinda guy you could build a team around, another player like him won't be coming around for awhile. Terrible move imo, good think I like the Yanks and Mariners lol.

I don't know, in the post Ichiro era, the M's are playing really well, I like their odd at putting the Angels in their place (the basement) by the end of the season. From what I heard, Ichiro wasn't the most sociable of teammates, and the move seems to be working out for both teams, it was just weird to think about Ichiro not in a Mariners uniform.

At least we won the Montero trade, and who can forget this

Varies greatly from sport to sport. I love Football (soccer) and am even running a a fantasy football league for the English Premiership on The Escapist [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.381061-Poll-Its-that-time-of-year-again-Fantasy-Football-time]

But there are some other sports I really couldn't give a shit about. All of the big American sports, besides Ice Hockey, for example.

I consider myself pretty geeky when it comes to video games but I love NFL football with a passion. Been a Greenbay Packer fan since age 3 and love combining my two loves in Madden. I'm even traveling 250 miles to go see my team this year. Other sports I can watch but don't really follow or care too much.

Big fan of sports. Pull for the University of Virginia in everything they do, which for football and basketball is typically an exercise in unrelenting anxiety in the face of unmet potential and a general inability to close out games. But hey, they're on the rise, and every other sport they have is doing great. For pro stuff, my closest team is several hours away, and I'm sure as hell not rooting for the goddamn Redskins, so for pro stuff, I go Texans (why not), Thunder (what's not to like), and the Red Sox (although almost every player I like is no longer with the team). I've never understood the rules for hockey so I pretend it doesn't exist, but I'll happily watch tennis or soccer.

I've never understood the hatred some people have for sports. Sure, there's the personalities and the massive amounts of money put into it, but that's another conversation. At its core, it's good healthy competition.

This is my bizarro favorite teams list (aside from the Mariners). Also reminds me of a friend I had whose favorite teams were the Packers, Yankees, Lakers, Florida State football, and UNC basketball, and he saw nothing unusual about this.

I love playing sports but I don't care too much about watching them. I see people get consumed over it to the point where they get infuriated or sad if their team doesn't win. And damn, I've seen some get extremely stressed and nervous if it's an elimination match involving their favourite team. Sure, these are the extremes, but it's not worth getting caught up in for me.

Plus, I just stop caring after 20 minutes of watching a sport. I'll go to an arena or stadium to watch a game if it's with my friends. It's a reason to get out of the house, get caught up in the excitement (even if I don't care who wins) and go out for some brewskis later. Apart of that, it's not my thing.

Back in the day when I was a fan, my teams were the Boston Bruins, Juventus, the Montreal Expos and the Montreal Alouettes.

WOW that is so weird! I love USF football and I love the Tar Heels! I thought I was only one, thats trippy man. Sounds like your friend is a pretty cool guy and has excellent taste in sports teams.
