Ok wow.

I've just spent the last half an hour pouring over some of the previews of The Encounter at Farpoint in HD.

I wept tears of joy.

I went into it thinking, oh how quaint, they're just going to replace all the fantastic starship models with garbage CGI versions with none of the character of the physical models, they're just going to make it all worse blah blah blah.

NO.

See for yourself.

My whole family have in some way grown up watching Star Trek on it's first runs, from my grandparents and parents watching TOS, to me watching the tail end of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, to my younger cousins growing up with Enterprise, we all love it. Some of us (like me) LIVE for Star Trek. I'm probably the most hardcore Purist in the family, yet after seeing these previews I don't think I could go back to the original SD versions anymore!

What about you guys? Did you break down into school girl hysterics or are you cold and sterile with thoughts about how Gene is spinning in his grave?

Well that's actually quite visual improvement, I'll be honest I've never watched Star Trek other than one episode of TNG and it was kinda boring, couldn't finish it, but that 3rd link eh I got quite into those 10 minutes and wouldn't mind watching the rest, it seems like this could actually be a good purchase.

I'm honestly not seeing any issues there with the updated visuals, to my relief. I'd certainly pay for it, and you could consider me a "hardcore" Star Trek fan, having watched every single season and every single episode of the Star Trek series at least once.. which is more than I could say is enjoyable for a few of the earlier TNG episodes..

That in my opinion was one of the best episodes of TNG. Very moving at the end.

OT: The restoration and transfer looks great. Perhaps when I am loaded and next fancy watching the series, I'll upgrade to blu-rays.

Call me when they do Deep Space Nine. That is a show I would love to see in Blu Ray. Still, this looks very impressive, and it didn't fall for the "cram with crap" approach of George Lucas.

Yeah, just wait until they replace all the phasers with walkie-talkies.

Actually, with those little tiny phasers, it'd be pretty hard to tell the difference.

Insert an image of Homer doing his schoolgirl giggle right here.

I think what's most impressive is that they've done a full restoration and remastered the effects without going overboard on new 'stuff' to cram into the image. I don't mean going the full Lucas and inserting little rats and crap running everywhere, but it must have been tempting to add more mechanical details to the ship, creatures and the like.

Now I want DS9, let's have the Dominion war in HD!
