So this discussion is about the spin off series of Stargate Atlantis, 'Stargate Universe' Im a really big stargate fan to the point where any sg1 or atlantis that comes on within seconds i can tell you the epiosde name which season and what happens ( very sad i know ) but the fact is Stargate is a great francise and the new series Universe has been cancelled with only 2 seasons just because not enough people are liking it and I can see the view from people who dont like it because of the "Drama" side of it where as SG1 and Atlantis still had a chessy humour to it , I feel stargate universe is "Darker" than the other series but still as a fan of stargate i believe it should continue so i'd like to see what The escapist thinks :)

I only saw the first few episodes, before they moved the timeslot. Presumably nobody was watching it, and I can see why.

Stargate SG1 got really tired towards the end, Atlantis went over the exact same ground as SG1 less effectively. I can sort of respect SGU for moving in a new direction, but they could have picked a better one.

For all I know the characters start being interesting and stop being suicidally stupid after the eps I'd seen, but I don't care enough to find out.

I think it's better sci-fi than both sg1 and atlantis... but then there is no Rodney McKay, so it is therefore inferior.

That... was painful to read. I'm guessing English isn't your native language, but certain effort in grammar would be appreciated.

Personally, I didn't like SG Universe. Not because of the drama, but utter illogic of it all. I get it that they are attempting to bring inter-personal history and conflicts into a more prominent role, but I feel at the start of an episode I have no idea which of the half a dozen personalities of any single given character we are dealing with this time.

Not to mention Rush can be utterly idiotic for a man that is supposed to be a genius.

I'm declaring it a writers fail. The characters aren't consistent and plot, like so many times in the past on the SG seasons, keeps jumping from topic to topic with only the loosest thread tying it together. It's as bad as Atlantis in that regard.

I like SG1, Atlantis, and the first movie. SG Universe is just too slow. I'm all for a good lost in space Si-Fi. However, I can't connect with people who are almost suicidal in their stupidity. It's like they all WANT to die, no other series came across like that to me.

Stargate: Universe is quite possible the best thing that have happened to the Stargate franchise since the very first movie.
It is dark, it is serious and a bit claustrophobic. The people are a*sh*les back and forth.
It's just awesome, it really is.

Stargate: Atlantis was the worst thing that could ever happen seeing as it's a f*cking copy paste of Andromeda.
Same stupid stereotypes, same stupid personalities. Ugh.. Hate it.
Ive never actully got into Andromeda i heard farscape was just a better version but I liked atlantis because it expanded on the Ancients which i feel was the best part of stargate but Universe really intreseted me for the new races plus they actully gave more plot to the Lucien alliance which i found great.

The Stargate fanboy inside me really want's to like it, but they are such a long way from what the show was.

In SG1 lot's of crazy sci-fi and action stuff was going on at once, with SGU it's 95% contemplating and dramatizing the situations and then they sprinkle a little bit of sci-fi on so it seem like Stargate... I hate them somuch for that because they keep me watching for those 5% that still makes it Stargate-ish.

SG:U was ok, so close to being good but trying to play the BSG angst without the same skill level of writers :/ Was beginning to get itself sorted and open up some bigger plot lines and stuff but was cut down before reaching its potential.

To be honest, they never developed anything enough. There wasn't a big focus on stargating, which would be ok if the drama going on onboard the ship was well-written and if they were exploring the ship consistently. It didn't really balance out, there wasn't a thread between episodes that I could comfortably follow and though they had a couple of different interesting episodes the first season was a bit boring. The Lucien Alliance attack was cool, but then the writers just seemed to not know what to do with them afterwards :/

Still, respect for making a different show to the IP's standard, even though it really was just a piggy-back on BSG.

Pretty much this. I'm a little surprised that Universe got cancelled so soon though.
One of the biggest things that bugged me about Stargate Universe is since when did the stargate have a limited range??? Every time I'd hear them talk about the Destiny being "out of range" I want scream because the stargate is not supposed to be limited by range, or at least it should be able to go anywhere within a single galaxy without issue.
I also hate the new look of the stargates.

I'm a massive fan of both SG-1 and Atlantis (together they're probably both in my top five TV series). However, I just really couldn't get into Universe, no matter how hard I tried, and stopped watching it a couple of episodes before the end of the first season. I have a feeling that I would have liked it much more if it had been set in its own universe (pun not intended) instead of being based on Stargate. It's just too different for me to like it in the same way.

I liked the premise and especially loved the main scientist who was kind of nuts (sorry I'm bad at remembering character names). I wish there was more exploration (which were my fave eps in sg1 and atlantis) and the whole romantic subplots were annoying. (and I'm a girl!) The only character I liked was that scientist, so I will have to go with eh....

Side note, my fave Atlantis episode is when Paul from Spin City finds a power belt and becomes a big shot in a town. =) soooo much fun which Universe was missing.

I love Stargate, it's been part of my life since I was young and have grown up with it, I even cried when Don S. Davis died. I loved SG-1 and Atlantis, yet as much as I want to like Universe it doesn't seem to be happening.

The only characters that really stand out to me are Rush and Eli, which are both the only characters who's names I can remember off the top of my head. Every other character seems to be just boring in comparison, which is my main complaint about the series; it's just boring. Almost every episode moves very slowly, some with little interesting events occuring, I understand they're trying to take the series in a darker direction, but they can do that with more than just boring character interactions, what irritates me more is that they try to make it darker by killing off characters, yet they always bring the character back to the point at which any potential character death hits me with the emotional impact of a pillow because I expect they'll be back in a few episodes.

Examples, the asian guy (can't recall his name) staying behind on that alien ship and then coming back in the mid-season finale and when Eli, Matt and possibly Chloe (I remembered!) are trapped on that planet with the Destiny out of range, so they jump through a bunch of planets to catch up with it, but at the end of the episode they're too late, next episode they just wander back through the gate on to the Destiny which completely trivialises the previous episode, it seems like this 'darker' side means the narrative just going around in circles.

I still watch it though, in the hope it will improve and the Stargate fanboy inside of me, shame I won't get to find out now. :'(
