So I log onto my computer, and I find this story on my homepage:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/45925760#45925760

Essentially, the student wanted the one of the photos to be her senior picture, and it was initially accepted. However, after a discussion with the schoolboard, the decision was reversed.

I know I'm not the majority voice here, but I personally thinks this smacks of the Schoolboard trying to grab attention by demonizing a young woman who just wants to express herself. The responses of the faculty and the editiors or the yearbook just scream 'we were told to do this, so we're doing it'. Like it or not, this is what my generation considers to be normal, and just because a bunch of 90 somethings who would scream whore at a woman with an inch of skin showing below the face say it's wrong, doesn't mean it is. In addition, the faculty or the editiors board, whichever came up with the idea to make her pay $300 to have the photo in the back, should be charged with extortion. It fits the definition.

Case in point, democracy is about expressing yourself. SCHOOLS ARE NOT FREE SPEECH FREE ZONES!!!! And the Government has no right to manipulate it's people through manipulating it's youth. In MY school district, there would already be a petition with a thousand signatures sitting in front of the editors board and the Principal.

So, thoughts?

Edit and Update: Story SOMEHOW made CNN, but apparantly, the Yearbook board, when they rejected the photo, then subsequently INSULTED her, calling her names, saying she was gross, a dirty whore, ect. In addition, the girl's father has also issued a statement saying that he also was cool with the photo and is behind his daughter 100%.

She looks like a pole dancer. Why she wants to look like THAT her senior picture is anyone's guess. Plus her mom (who is nearly indistinguishable from her daughter in the CREEPIEST way possible) said "I knew this would happen," making me think they just wanted to push it as far as it could go.

The school sort of backed itself into a corner with this one. They should have had a good look at those pictures before they said yes. But either way, I'm with the school on this one. The official portrait should follow the school dress code, because they might want to use those pictures later for some sort of presentation, and I'm fairly certain her wannabe stripper pics don't fit that bill.

Yearbook photos aren't for artistic expression--and I'm saying this as an art student myself. They're a documentation. That's what senior pictures are for. There is a place for everything, and she should not expect to be able to put her pictures wherever she pleases. It just doesn't work that way. The school sets the standards for their official photos. Yes the $300 thing seems despicable, but life isn't always fair, and it obviously wasn't set up as a trap for her. That's just the price of having something custom in the yearbook. And she keeps using the word "art" as though it's some sort of violation of the first amendment. The first amendment can only work in her favor if she's the one commissioning the book.

And for God's sake, it's a yearbook. A fucking yearbook. The thing won't even matter a year from now. If she wants her "art" to be immortalized, there are a lot more permanent ways of doing so than a stupid yearbook picture.

Stop the presses -_-

A yearbook isn't for modelling photos, it's for the faces & names so you can remember everyone. Why on earth she/her mum have let this get as far as media attention, I've no idea.

Does she really look that bad? She shows skin, sure, but it's not like she's got a suit á la Catwoman from Arkham City.

No. Yearbooks aren't the place for modelling photos, nor is the second photo appropriate for a school-produced publication (the general view I have seen when this kinda thing has come up before, is that if you would willingly attach it to your C.V. it's probably fine).

I haven't watched the full thing but I loved it!

Firstly, home of the demons (or something) that's pretty bad ass!

Second, it's not like her tits are out or shes naked and covering her bits.

Third, there is a black and white picture with a guy with his top off, which pretty much screams "this is a professional male model shot", seems a bit sexist to me.

Fourth, "I like to be different, I am not one to stand against a wall and smile" while showing a pic of her stood against a wall and modeling ... well at least she isn't smiling, as models don't smile, EVER!

Edit. I should add, as a Brit we don't have yearbooks. So I am not sure what the standard is but seeing a topless guy in there kind of set the standard.

I gotta point to the black and white picture of the guy with his top off. If that's going to be in the yearbook, then so should her stripperiffic pictures.

And they are indeed stripperiffic. The clothes she wears and the poses she strikes screams of sexual provocation, something which shouldn't be in any school yearbook. Again, though, the fellow with his shirt off screams the same thing, so why is it in there?

I don't think they should even allow her to put it in as an ad. That sounds like blackmail if I've ever heard it. It's not something that I would want in my school yearbook. I want that for remembering my friends and the times I had with them, not for those sorts of pictures.
the black and white photo of the guy without a shirt was in the ad section I thought, which is where she was allowed to buy space for her modelling pictures.

IMO, no, a yearbook, the parts that are supposed to remind you of the students, shouldn't be modelling shots.
But if she wore those clothes/outfits to school often and routinely struck those poses as her 'thing', then that might be yearbook-worthy.

My thoughts? Nope doesn't belong in the year book . It's not about freedom of speech or what ever you are going on about . It's not something fiting for a school year book, it's inappropriate . If she wants to take pictures like that and put it on her facebook or whatever fine . But for a school picture not so much .

And please , don't try to make it look like because she's a girl and shows too much skin everyone is screaming whore , if i guy was dressed in an inappropriate manner this would still happen . You wouldn't go to a business meeting at worked dressed "racey" either would you? It's a matter of respect , image and the fact it's inappropriate for the event .

Dress how you want in your free time , but not at a school event .

If I recall, you have to sign an agreement with the school in order for them to take pictures of you. This is entirely optional, and if you choose to opt out of the agreement, they are not legally allowed to take photographs of you. When you sign it, however, they have the rights to do with the photos what they want. It is ultimately their decision on what does and does not enter the yearbook.

Video crashed and wouldnt load, but is this about the girl who looks like a welldressed slut bent over in a suggestive manner looking between banister stairs?

Because I dont think they should be in there. Oh, its perfectly fine if she wants that for her personal senior photo, but you have to remember that other people get these books, and they expect a certain level of professionalism fromthe rest of the student body as they do their students, and thats not something they'd be pleased to see when reminiscing with family memebers about their childs academic career.

Yeah lets get 3 nerdy chicks and 2 lesbians to decide whether the popular chick who's probably teased them since elementary should get what she wants.

And how the schiza is this national news? we all know Sydney Spies will be come Sydney Sizzles, where she will be featured on Double Dancer Fridays, so why not just let her do whatever?

My thoughts? I'd ask you to kindly get your facts straight before posting this. The schoolboard had NO say in this, it was the yearbook staff (other students!) who declined it. Flawed posts just skew the people's perception away from the truth, it's not very professional and leads to bias and falsehoods.

Well the school had me until I saw the other picture with the shirtless guy. Double standards much? And if it's inappropriate for a yearbook then why could she use it for an ad? I'm also 95% sure this is a stunt for her 10 minutes of fame. Nobody can seriously care that much about a yearbook photo. Just take another less slutty one? Believe it or not it is possible to look like a model without being slutty.
