So, reading up on science-y things one day I stumbled across the concept of singularity.

This is the point at which humanity develops so far that our consciousnesses have merged with technology, ultimately becoming a sort of super-intelligent human-computer thing. Basically, it evolves beyond the point-of-no-return.

So I ask you, Escapaneers - What do you think of the Singularity?

I look forward to it and only hope I live long enough to Merge with the Singularity. ;)

Immortality and bliss? Yeah, I'll take that.

Sounds better than what we've got now. Reminds me of something... probably an Asimov short story I read a while ago. 'The Last Question'.

But if it were entirely down to me, I'd have to know a lot more before I could throw the metaphorical switch.

EDIT: Captcha - Talevi concept. That sounds like something from a sci-fi novel, so I'm keeping it :D

I don't see it as an inherently good or bad thing.
That said, I don't think I know enough on the subject to say anything with certainty.

Here's a good webcomic that sort of revolves around the concept by the way:

I know, it sounds fairly epic. And as someone quoted "the Rapture for nerds". I think I'd only go for it when there was nothing else for me to do in the universe or something. It sounds quite Geth-like, or like a hive of bees. The loss of individuality is not a thing I look forward to...

That is too philosophical an idea for me to answer with a single post, I usually answer those kinds of questions by dwelling on it and constantly thinking in circles until my answer is "I'm not sure".

honestly, i think to survive as an entity, we will have to become ever more efficient and i believe a purpose built thinking machine has the ability to be more efficient than a flesh and blood human machine, but we will see in time, wont we?
either that or we could shrink a colony of humans down to a couple hundred per planet so our effect on it was minimal and survive for as long as possible and make sure we are 'backed up' in several solar systems so the human race won't get wiped out by natural disasters or aliens or something

change definitely has to happen at any rate we know we cant survive as a race with our current policy of population growth and resource consumption

if i could live in an adaptive brain that duplicates my thought process and would give me the same or better quality and quantity of life at reduced impact to the world in which i live i'd be a fool to say no wouldn't i ?

but that's the real question isn't it, is it 'better' ?
i don't mind points of 'no return' to our old form if we can definitely prove we gain something, at the end of the day we could just make new bodies for ourselves even if it takes half a million years to smooth out all the bugs out of living tissue and dna sequences, it's not like we wont have the technology to do it at that point, maby we could even engineer the perfect body to be in after spending time as pure machines if they turn out to be flawed in some way we cannot accept the thing is we would have time very much on our side!
anyway, i'll never see it so whatever :)

Other.

I'm hoping the singularity will be good but part of me is freaked out by the fact that what will come after the singularity is completely incomprehensible to our current state of mind.

You explained it poorly. It does not mean we become GLADOS in any sense of the word since most people seem to think of Geth (hive mind) or Glados (lose your body).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity

Its predicted the 2040s will be the event of the Singularity.
The concept of Singularity can be interpreted in different ways, most people accept the Vernor Vinge idea.
But, because the very nature of a technological singularity means that it will be incomprehensible to current generations - therefore, I've tried to interpret it in relation to other ideas that have been put forward.

My apologies for the badly explained-ness :)

The issue is, on a genetic scale, that the more similar we are, the more vulnerable we are. So in that respect, no.

In the respect that the human mind is an incredible computer, and that using technology to open up it's possibility could open up limitless possibility, then yes.

Either way, I'll be dead before this happens. Although I've always wanted to be able to learn things like Neo in the Matrix, by downloading them into my brain. That seems like a good compromise.
