Basically, a 17 rear old in China sold sold one of his kidneys so he can buy a iPad 2. He got 20,000 yuan(about $3000 USD) for the kidney and bought the iPad2 for $500. The 17 year old's health is deteriorating. His mother, who had no idea what her son was planning, tried to get in contact with the kidney broker but to no one's surprise, has been unable to reach him.

Would you ever consider selling your kidney if you were guarenteed that it would not affect your health? Why your why not?

The human body really doesn't have too many 'spare parts'. It's all in there for a reason. (If anyone brings up the appendix, I will pop you right in the kisser.)

I think the kid's parent(s?) should have taught him about a little something called 'long-term consequences'.

Or in this case, short term. His health deteriorated pretty rapidly from what I can tell.

I would not be that desperate for any material possession that I would be willing to give away parts of my body for, especially an Apple product as I am guessing that the iPad 3 will be launched very soon, at least it wouldn't surprise me if an announcement was made.
The only time I would be willing to give up a kidney is if a loved one needed it and I was a match for them.

The kidneys contain about 2 million nephrons, you only need about 800,000 to live without dialysis. And you don't need that much lung or liver to live.

I wouldn't give mine away though, it's like giving away a spare tire or condom. Just after you've given it away, the need pops up.

Like that kid. He gave away his kidney...and apparently he needed both of them, because he isn't doing so hot at the moment. Unless the kidney broker's (hopefully) doctor didn't have stellar surgical skills and that's the cause.

That's incredible. Incredibley stupid, horrifying and awesome at the same time.
I'm not sure what to say, except that the next time I'll think about joking when I want to buy something badly and say I'll sell an organ for it.

If the price was very very good I'd think about it. I highly doubt I'll ever receive the offer. I would also give it up for my best friends, certain family members and other loved ones if they required it and matched properly.

As someone plagued by health problems myself, I would never ever sell an organ ESPECIALLY to Apple, essentially.

Anyway, this doesnt surprise. parlty cause its china, so I wouldnt be surprised if they just took the kid's kidney and said screw you, partly cause this is eventually what apple products will cost, and partly because I've heard worse reasons to sell a body part.

... still, I dont know, I feel bad for the mom, and the kid, even if he wont use it and is deteriorating.
