Personally for me? RPG's. They have a great storyline and usually have great gameplay. Shooters come in at a close second.

Probably RPG?s too. I like to have a good storyline so I get why I'm going round, normally, killing things.

Action-adventure games, preferably action. I love playing games with a real thrill, like Prince of Persia, as well as a lengthy quest, like in the Kingdom Hearts games. I'd vote for adventure, but that implies games like Monkey Island, which are great but aren't what I'm after.

I love RPG's just because I like the idea of leveling up and making the character I want to play. But I own an xbox making me an insane trigger happy fag. FPS for me. I can nevver get enough blood!!!!

I don't have a real favorite genre, but most of my favorite games have soem rpg influences. Deus Ex, Jagged Alliance 2, System Shock 2, they all have some RPG elements without actually being an rpg.

But I also loved Planescape Torment, Fallout 2 and Arcanum, and those really are RPG's. Especially the last two allowed for some great role-playing.

The replies about RPG's and good stories made me giggle, because most RPG stories are a huge dish of cliché with a side order of crap.

Adventure games! I don't mind at all if they have other elements, like rpg, action or even puzzle or whatever. But I like adventure games, although admittedly I have a pretty vague notion of what that actually means.

Adventure sounds like fun, anyways. I like adventures.

It's hard for me to choose, but I went with fighting games because the hours of enjoyment I've gotten out of various fighting games playing against friends, and strangers in the arcade outweigh time spent playing all other genres.

I like first person shooters and sports games the best i think. And also bizarre Japanese games that don't make sense and aren't about anything. *Cough* Vib Ribbon *Cough*

Nowadays, mostly adventure games. I used to be into Japanese RPGs, but good ones are few and far between.

Its all about fighting, baby! By this I mean 2D Fighters and Beat-em-ups. I can play fighting games all day, even if I win or lose. The only problems I have with it is that I have noone to fight against because none of my buddies play fighting games much and they seem to be only 3D ones being releases (3D is for wusses). Same thing with beat-em-ups. It was all about putting your quarter in for a couple lives and kicking some ass. Sadly I really dont see these anymore, probably because some "certain people" dont like 2D. Man I am tired of 3D.

PS: I find my self enjoying a good RPG when I am not kicking ass.

Well, I think the idea is good stories compared to most games. Which isn't hard I guess when most games have little or no story.

I vote RPGs too. I like creating and customising characters, building them up as the game progresses. I like exploring and interacting with large environments and numerous NPCs. And yeah, I do like the story to some of them, if at least for the characters and the complexity, and some sense of immersion, even if they are overly cliched or basic.

If Turd A smells less offensive then Turd B, that doesn't mean the smell of Turd A is praiseworthy. True, the occasional RPG has a good story, but so does the occasional shooter or platformer.

Pretty much everything you said. RPG stories aren't necessarily better, just bigger. And when you're throwing a whole bunch of mud at a wall...
I love FPSes when I just want to do something in half an hour but RPGs when I've got the time.

My favorite genre is the RTS and I even like the Civilization style (no idea what to call it) to a degree but I've never found them to be quite as addicting as a good RTS. Second would be shooters with a good multiplayer because it's rare that a FPS has a really enthralling campaign mode and I love being challenged by other players instead of a pre-programmed computer.

After those two I really have nothing much I play regularly. I think the Oblivionesque RPG type of game could become my favorite if implemented a bit better such as more variety instead of the same three dungeons with different textures. Also, I'd almost rather there was no main quest and instead you ran around getting all your action from talking to people, the guilds and wandering in and out of dungeons looking for treasure.

I've practically given up on the MMO unless a new MMOFPS like Planetside comes out. After years of EQ addiction, hating WoW and EQ2, never taking SWG out of beta, giving up on FFXI after a month and getting bored with EVE after a month I think I'm done with that genre for a while.
