yeah, WTF!?!? First, when did people just judge and review games based on their appearance, and why is it a RIP OFF!? That pisses me right off, first, bosses, different crafting, different maker, 2d, more monsters, more items, stats, actual people to talk to, the list goes on, but since it looks like Minecraft but 2d, its a rip off?? Seriously, I trust this community on not being full of stupid people with a web camera making them a big shot, suit wearing movie producers that think everything just scaves to their expectations. I personally looked up youtube, watched every single one and all the reviewers I guarantee are under the age of 18. Its really sad, this game is wonderful, a mix of minecraft building, castlevania slaughtering and a few board type RPG elements to make this game stand out. Its fun to kill, build, create, explore and doesn't do much harm when you die, so exploring every inch just makes it more the worth for the almost infinite treasures reaching out into the farthest sea. Sorry for rambling, what do you think of this game, might as well make a poll.

"Terraria, wtf? I don't remember what that is...unless its that Minecraft rip off I lol'd @ a few weeks ago"
Yep, it is that.

To be fair, Minecraft is a rip off of Infiniminer, but much larger in scope.
Terraria looks exactly like Minecraft would look, if it was 2d imo.
I've played it, and it seems almost exactly like Minecraft, but more for children who just want to kill things instead of make pyramids and cities.

Edit: Why are there so many choices for the poll...
lol, all the choices are varying degrees of "WOW TERRARIA IS AMAZING, ZOMG" and it isn't even a poll at all, it is "Terraria is great."
You're in the wrong place to advertise your game ye off little posts.

This game uses Minecraft Elements. Minecraft uses elements from Infiniminer. Minecraft is also in first person view. Does that mean Minecraft ripped off Doom? I think not. It uses methods and mechanisms from previous games, yes. It borrows ideas and it improves upon them. That is not theft, that is progress, innovation. Minecraft did not patent the right to move blocks from one space to another or to transmute them into something of higher quality, nor did it invent that. Terraria is a game in its own right and it did not steal anything. I've played it for a good amount and it just doesn't feel like minecraft at all. There are boss enemies, dungeons, item crafting has a lot more importance, there are role playing elements. It's not minecraft, it takes an element from minecraft and implements it in the gameplay, whereas minecraft IS that one single element. This entire discussion is just ridiculous and in my opinion kicked up by rabid fans of minecraft who do not want anything but minecraft. I consider myself a fanatically devout fan of Deus Ex and I wouldn't be angry to see another cyberpunk fps rpg with an emphasis on stealth and a heavily engaging storyline, I would be delighted and thrilled to see what someone else can do with a dark, oppressive universe full of conspiracies. Copying is not theft. If done right, copying is the best and greatest way of innovation.

To be honest Terraia looks like the bastard child of Minecraft and Worms, which is a good thing in my honest opinion, for 10 bucks I'll probably get it

Notch said on his Twitter page the other day, in response to somebody asking about Terraria, that he thought it was completely different and was really looking forward to playing it. If the maker of the supposedly ripped off party doesn't consider it a rip off, that's a pretty good indication that it's not.

Wow, there isn't a single negative response on that poll. You may as well have just made every option "Terraria is awesome". What was the point in even making it a poll?

It looks like a more combat-focused Minecraft to me. Yes, I think it is a ripoff of Minecraft, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Minecraft is a rip-off of Infiniminer but that doesn't make it any less good.

I think people call it a ripoff because it uses many of the mechanics that made Minecraft popular. That being said, I don't think its a ripoff, as Minecraft itself was inspired by Infiniminer and another game... I think Dwarf Fortress.

I think its kinda cool that elements of Minecraft are being incorporated into other games. I greatly enjoy Minecraft, but even the most avid fans must admit that it is really nothing more than a sandbox. It'd be fun to see how the mechanics work out in a different game genre.

I don't plan on getting Terraria however. Steam annoys me. Maybe if another version ever shows up, I'll consider it.

No I don't think 2D makes any difference. I think the completely different gameplay makes a difference. With its bosses and dungeons, and special items and such, it's more like an RPG, whereas minecraft is a more of a sandbox game.

"Terraria, a blatant rip off."

Yes, it is. Just not of ONLY Minecraft. Your lovely little poll doesn't include an option for people who disagree with you, so I'm not voting.

I've played Terraria a good deal, and it's not necessarily bad. It's just not good. Allow me to explain.

It starts out in a very Minecraftian way: get wood, make workbench, yadda yadda biddly boo. You even need to spend your first night in a shelter to get your bearings on how the game works whilst avoiding zombies. Then you go out and start harvesting minerals. At this point, it stops being like Minecraft.

You encounter more enemies than in an endless grass field in Pokemon, often to the point where harvesting is tedious only because of constantly needing to stop. Having the high ground just means you can't hit the enemy but they can hit you. Your character jumps back in agony for even the tiniest of smacks, resulting in many falls off of massive cliffs thanks to slimes.

There's a dungeon which you cannot access until much later in the game, but it still allows you to access it so it can pull a "I Wanna Be The Boshy" style monster attack on you that insta-kills you for daring to go out of order on the game.

At the very bottom of the world you need to watch out for an enemy that constantly spawns and constantly fires at you in a way that is barely avoidable and just flat out not fun. But by this point, I encountered what it really rips off.

MMORPGS. You need to collect certain amounts of stuff to get the certain item so you have the certain equipment to face off against the certain bad guy. And for what? There's no end game, no final boss, no incentive to do that. The only reason is to have all the good stuff. With Minecraft at the very least you can turn around and build some truly nice things. In Terraria, once you've gotten the biggest and shiniest things and traipsed through the entire world to grab all the rarities there's nothing left to do. Sure, you can build some nice 2D homes, but there's not as much room to make cool things when you're limited to two dimensions.

So, this isn't a good game. It's not a bad game, but there's nothing original about it. It cut and paste a few ideas together, which I guess is innovative, but it's just not very fun if you happen to have other games that already excel at this.

I love how every option on your poll is favourable to Terraria.

Where's the "Yup, I think it's a blatant rip-off" option?

Because it seems pretty damn clear that the developers are have their sights set on Notch's immense money pile.

This reminds me of 3d dot game heroes being called a Zelda clone (a good Zelda clone, but still)Yes you can call a game that has different graphics, different weapons/ weapon attributes, and different or at least many more varieties of enemies, and have the two games in question to have the same core principles a clone, but it does not seem like an appropriate term. In both Mincraft and Terraria there is a similarly based crafting system (both have a furnace and workbench) both have exploration for materials, and both have a create aspect. However the inventory, the crafting 'recipes', enemies, perspective, areas/ or biomes are vastly different from one another. Also Terraria is more focused on its fighting and game-play aspects, while Minecraft is focused on its creative, and defense from enemies (in some cases) aspects.

While the poll is quite a bit biased, I agree with the OP in that its not a minecraft clone, Fortresscraft is a minecraft clone, this is a game that is quite a bit different. 2d sidescrolling action with building elements. I mean hell, the only thing thats similer between Minecraft and Terraria is the fact that beds can change your spawnpoint, stronger enemy's come out at night, and you can build stuff, thats it.

Terraria has more in common with maplestory then it does with minecraft. I love both games to death, but I wouldnt say they are quite so similer to be able to compare them. Terraria probably took some inspiration from minecraft no doubt, but ripoff is a bit much >.>

Edit: Gameplay trailer for those who came in here quite confused.

Fail poll is fail.

Anyways, the whining of the fanboys gave it WAY more publicity then it ever would have otherwise, well done! Besides, it doesn't look half bad. Just because it's been done before doesn't mean it shouldn't be redone.

I don't care enough to actively seek a copy, though. I'd only play it if I was gifted it.
