These three films are generally viewed as the best Vietnam movies by most of the people that I know. Which of these do you think is the best and why?

Apocalypse Now was the first of these that I saw, and at the time I didn't think much of it. Too long, overly dramatic and confusing. I saw it again a few years ago and loved it. If you are going to see it, see the original cut. The extended edition is much worse.

Full Metal Jacket was a film that shocked me the fist time I saw it. The scene where Pvt. Pyle goes insane was genuinely frightening to me, like staring into the horrors in man's soul. This film does a good job at balancing the lighthearted moments with scenes of unimaginable horror.

Platoon is, in my opinion, the film that focuses the most on the actual war. Apocalypse Now has a story that could be transplanted into pretty much any way (the original story takes place in colonial Africa). Full Metal Jacket seems to be more about how men are destroyed, their souls deadened by combat and training. Platoon's story is firmly rooted in the Vietnam war, and it would not truly work in any other setting. In some ways it is the most "realistic" of the three. There is very little comic relief and sets a tone of sadness in a story of men with no moral restraint.

Of the three, I like Full Metal Jacket the most. It tells a story that has clear moral and social messages that aren't bogged down in confusing delivery like Apocalypse Now, and feels less.... stereotypical than Platoon's more simple story of a group of insane soldiers.

I still love all three films and would easily recommend all of them.

edit: Added Good Morning Vietnam and We Were Soldiers per request.

Technically, its about Korea, not Vietnam, but MASH was brilliant. for the first time soldiers were not the focal point of a war movie. It was an exellently subtle smack in the face to US foreign policy, and you kinda feel guilty that you're laughing your arse off at one of the worst tragedies in war

Jacobs Ladder here although very little of it is set in the war, the consequences of it are present throughout the entire movie.

There are so many different Vietnam movies than those four. Most have their own goodness, but still, we can't make a decision unless you make an effort.

Other good Vietnam films include 84 Charlie MoPic (1989) and Go Tell The Spartans (1978). Good films with Vietnam in the background include Who'll Stop The Rain (1979), Coming Home (1978), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989) and Regret To Inform (1998). It's not a movie, but the first (unbelievably dark) season of "Tour Of Duty" (1987) is hands down the best Vietnam treatment for television.

Good gravy, how can you leave off We Were Soldiers and put Good Morning Vietnam in there? None of the other movies begin to approach it.
They all have their moments, of course. Apocalypse has the Air Cav assault. Full Metal Jacket has the Parris Island scenes with Lee Emery. Platoon has... Well, I can't think of anything. Good Morning has the scene where Robin Williams does an impromptu "show" for the soldiers on the trucks. But none of them come close to describing the experience of the actual soldiers the way We Were Soldiers does for, basically, the whole show.
Wow, I'm actually emotional. This is an odd feeling.

Full Metal Jacket no question. R Lee Ermy is brilliant as the Drill Sergeant in that, and Kubrick was a fucking genius.

The film stars Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. as a group of prima donna actors [bold]making a Vietnam War film[/bold] when their fed-up writer and director decide to abandon them in the middle of the jungle, forcing them to fight their way out.
doesn't say it's about the war, it says "it's about guys making a movie about the war"

the 3 aforementioned films are ABOUT the war, they take place during the war, Tropic Thunder takes place in modern day
