Ok, so basically I had Windows Vista Business on my computer for three years, and although I was skeptical about it at the time, I dealt with it. In that time I had hundreds of 'Not Responding' and multiple errors that no one else seemed to get, but I dealt with it. Then, a few weeks ago when my Hard Disk broke down and I purchased a new one I also acquired a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk and installed it. And....

[HEADING=1]HOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/HEADING]

The improvement in performance was mind blowing. My processor copied files twice as fast, games and programs installed so much faster and I didn't get stuck or get 'Not Responding'. Ever!

One of the biggest changes I noticed was thus: my computer isn't a beast, but it can play the newest games pretty decently. Back when I had Vista Batman: Arkham Asylum and Starcraft II lagged so bad I ended up getting bluescreen multiple times. Now Starcraft II plays as smooth as a 360 can run a Halo 3. My only conclusion is that Vista had so much crap in it that everything slowed down and suffocated my hardware. I also noticed that I have half the number of processes running in the task manager. Plus with User Account Control fixed to do it's job without ruining my life the OS runs so smoothly, while keeping you safe without restricting you.

When my friends ask me what I think of Windows 7 I say: "It's like they took all the bugs in Vista, (probably 8 phonebooks worth) sat down in a room, and didn't leave until they solved every single problem." It's quite accurate to say this as 7 has all the great features Vista did (like Aero) only they run smoother. Of course it doesn't have everything Vista did, Movie Maker 6 isn't there anymore but I did find an installer on the web so you can use WMM 6.0 for Windows 7.

[HEADING=2]Moral:[/HEADING]
If you are running Vista, upgrade to Windows 7 or suffer a significant reduction in performance!

Now Escapists, I ask your of your thoughts on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

I agree with you, I started on this computer with Vista and upgraded to 7. I absolutely love 7; it works even better than XP and it looks even better than Vista.

I prefer 7 and all that but never had any issues with Vista. Both are better than XP which really was a buggy piece of shit even with SP3. Microsoft is moving in the right direction for sure.

My exposure to Vista was very limited. It worked when I used it, but it wasn't as good as XP since nothing is.
I am unfortunately stuck with 7 at the moment. It is a wretched abomination. it's like if you took XP, gutted it of everything that worked, and made it into a slightly less crappy mac.

Yeah, because Windows 7 is known to crash repeatedly, oh wait no it isn't.

Thing is, many video games aren't supporting XP, and neither does DirectX 10 and 11. Unless you don't play video games, which is fine.

I used to have Windows XP for quite a few years, and Windows 7 is basically that, but shinier and much faster when booting up and loading things.

How exactly doesn't it work? I have Windows 7 on my computer AND my incredibly old laptop, and I've had no problems so far.

Thanks man, the Medic is the best Starcraft II unit ever.

*Cough* On topic: While new operating systems aren't cheap, I can safely say that if you're using Vista, the best and probably cheapest way to up your computer's performance is to buy Windows 7.

Try seeing if you know anyone who's a teacher and you'll get it for a discount.

I have Vista and am fine with it although I have very rarely used other ones (XP at school and 7 on my dad's laptop a couple times). Hopefully I will be getting a new laptop with Windows 7 soon so I can see if there's any sort of change.

Yeah, because Windows 7 is known to crash repeatedly, oh wait no it isn't.
If it does, you're probably running it on an HP system.

Though I too stuck with XP, since my initial runs with 7 were rather lackluster. Nor is there any reason to upgrade my current rig since it is getting on it its years.

Strange thing is, the old HP systems (especially the laptops) are incredibly durable. I am typing on an HP laptop; one that doesn't support Windows 7 with its drivers, and thus doesn't have hardware acceleration or directDraw, somehow. Yet, it stil runs perfectly.

Probably the computer's fault, not the operating system's.

+1.

Everything good about Windows 7 is tenfold better in XP, or just as good, but less shiny.

Come to think of it, you can make XP shiny, too. :p

Dell systems aren't much better. I've had my hard drive replaced twice, my GPU once and even my mobo has needed fixing. Once the warranty ran out they said they'd charge me $200 for a new Samsung 500GB internal. Instead I bought my own Segate 500GB for $85. It's smaller, faster and cheaper.

Basically the Dell custom computers are built with sub-par components and they only way to fix it is to replace them one by one.

EDIT: I realize this isn't a software issue, I'm just trying to make a point.

I too was blown away by the improvement between Vista and 7; at first I kinda liked Vista and thought the complaints were overstated, and then my computer started locking up every 5 minutes. What a piece of shit.

Then again, I don't even remember how awesome XP was, since it's been several years since I used it. Either way, 7 is indeed shiny and a massive improvement over Vista, even if it's trying to rip off OS X ever so slightly.

I currently am running WIndows Vista, and haven't had any of the problems others have reported. It runs far better then my XP computer used to, though admittedly that was a nearly ancient system.
