I am designing a game that uses the four traditional classes, and I wanted to know what everyone thinks their "trademark" skills and weapons are.
IE

Fighter:
Melee
No Range
Armor

Mage:
Melee spell
Fireball
Magic Missile

Cleric:
weak Melee
Heal
weak Combat spell

Thief (more ranged that thief for my game's purpouses)
weak Melee
Ranged
magic arrows (ie fire, ice, ect)

EDIT: it is a multi only game, so likelihood would be 3-4 of the classes in each party

Well, for a start, I think you'd be better off not using the most generic, overused classes of all time. I'm designing a game (for fun) and it has over 55 unique classes, and it's set up in a way that would allow for another 50+ if I put my mind to it. Although it would be a little extreme to actually make.

OT: There's not a lot you can do with them. What you've wrote pretty much sums it up.

Fighter: Most melee weapons and armor. You could have a skill system, e.g., "Power Swing", "Focus", etc, etc.

Mage: Uses staffs and wands. Robes. Various magic spells.

Cleric: Heal, revive, cure. Buff/Debuff spells if you wish. Weak attacks?

Thief: Daggers and Bows, maybe whips and such. Skills: 'Steal', 'Flip' (Flip a coin to deal extra damage), etc.

You're better off taking inspiration from your favorite games and mix it up a little.

Poor Cleric's got nothing but healing, how are they going to fight? Give them some decent attack at least, melee or ranged. Unless it's a multiplayer only game, but even then people in my experience don't like being stuck doing nothing but healing others.

An all white mage party is hilariously powerful in the original Final Fantasy. I'm going with that.

well, this is also very dependent on if the game is combat only. The thief is usually a hell of a lot better in a game where you can wander in a town and steal, lie, and cheat you way into places, through blockades, and into houses. The mage of course is squish, ranged w/ magic and very intelligent, usually able to use his wits in a battle to help, not just magic. Fighter is just that, he doesn't ask questions, he doesn't talk, he kills. Finally the cleric, the devout healer, obviously pump/support spells and heals. Also using a cleric can help by bringing on followers and convincing people to help you.
