Because it shouldn't.

http://www.tribesascend.com/

Really, all I can say is this next generation of shooters is half a generation old. To the vets, give it a shot. Its free and really holds well to the true thing that makes Tribes Tribes, freedom of movement has held up surprisingly well. To those new, you have yet to experience the thrill of the speed and movement. Have you ever held a flag thinking I really wish I could be going 100km with this thing. Well now you can.

Its going to be free, you can sign up for the beta right now so whats the harm? Yes, being FTP does come with the hurdles that I think will slightly tarnish the game (restricting loadouts is my biggest concern). Yet, still doesn't tarnish the fact that you can play what it is, for free. Take the dive, I think you wont regret it.

Peace out.

P.S. Yes, I know, posting here is not the wisest, since there is going to be a few of you who are console crazy and only have a basic 300 dollar computer that might not be able to play this game. Oh well.

Wow, way to generalize, if anything there's more PC users on this site than anything else.

OT: this game is on my radar, and I'll check in on it when it is fully released.

Would be delightful if the game didn't hide my mouse cursor on the menus and have just a black screen with a HUD and lovely noises in the background whenever I load a game.

This made me laugh. Not because you were funny. Because you're laughable misinformed.

300 dollars could run that game. Easy. I could make one play it on max, but we'll say it is at least the minimum. And not just because of the hardware I could find, or what 300 dollars can afford. UE3 supports a very wide range of settings.

The troll was hard, but definitely a swing and a miss...

OT: I played the alpha, it was a lot of fun, even though we only had one weapon. Also couldn't change the mouse sensitivity... So the beta is probably much better than that! With its own set of quirks I'm sure.

I second the motion to check the game out though. Removing friction from an FPS is so simple..yet it makes it so much more fun.

I hear good things about this. If my unplayed game pile weren't currently up to my balls, I would be all over it. As it stands this is probably a Q1 2012 game for me. :(

Never heard of this before but looks alot like halo(not a fan of halo myself) is it like halo?
or is it like a halo art style of unreal tournament 2004 looking at the speed of movement?

Tribes and counter strike hold a very special place in my heart. The fact that I still remember a huge amount of league play from tribes 1 after all this time says something about how special it really was.

Sad how one of the greatest league games from the greatest era of competitive fps gaming is now forgotten. Damn casuals.

ps; what is quake?!?!?!

Well, it should kinda be known that Tribes is much older than halo, but it's like any competitive FPS. It's in first person. And you shoot people.

what sets it apart, is jet packs. You can fly in the air, and attack from above, which really opens up the maps. They also serve to turn off friction. Imagine you're skydiving at terminal velocity, and you hit a hill, with friction off, you lose no speed, you zip down the hill, and ramp off the small incline at the bottom, over the enemy defenders, grab the flag and keep going full speed back to your base.

(...Results may vary.)

Ive already been playing it and its great to see a fast paced FPS desgined for PC to return. My history with tribes was short lived having played tribes 2 competitivly for about 3 months before my life with the military called me away and overseas. I never returned and I dont really have a reason why. However its a pleasant surprise to see it return

Tribes ascend is an awesome game (even in the beta) but the thing is some people will not like it and others will absolutely fall in love with it. I think the majority of people will go into the game expecting it to be a lot like CoD or battlefield but soon grow frustrated when they find out that the majority of weapons are not hit scan weapons. It is not easy to shoot someone in tribes, especially when theyre traveling at 150+ miles per hour. Those people will be unable to adjust and probably leave because the game isnt for them.

I share the concerns about loadouts but after playing the game for awhile I think Im comfortable with it being more class based. Otherwise everyone would choose the best armor type for their style of play and roll around with weapons that dont really fit that type of armor. For me it makes sense for mortor launchers to only be on a heavy class

I do wish the class selection screen gave more info for new players, for example a new player might not know what the jumper classes thrust pack is and what it does for them. New players (or maybe veterans returning) might not realize that a weapon like the eagle pistol is a hit scan weapon while the Spinfusor isnt.

My other problem is with tribes gold. No it doesnt have to do with buying the extra classes, its just that I think tribes gold is a little overpriced at this time. Its great you can unlock everything in the game without spending money similar to League of legends champions but I would like to see a free class per week idea implemented so people can try before they buy or alternatively I would like to see a cut in the cost for tribes gold.

My third problem is I just wish there were more game types.

Anyway, I highly recommend people check it out (doubly so since it will be free). What other games can you rocket past your enemies at 150+ mph and jump a skyscrapers height only to rain fiery death down on them?

Sorry, pure multiplayer is not something I enjoy, and only occassionally dabble in it if a single player game happens to include it. At least in MW3 I can play spec ops and survival, between short multiplayer bouts. A bit off topic, but I wonder how many people are aware of the fact that Tribes is a spinoff of the Earth Siege mech simulator games.
