Firstly, there's alot of bad Death Metal around. Bands that seem to think Death Metal = making noise (and of course the fans that think incomprehensible = better). But, that said, Death Metal contains some of the best displays of pure musical ability available. Particularly in the case of drums, which are used as instruments rather than the glorified metronomes they seem to be in so many other genres.
yes, but sometimes the drums are glorified metronomes in overdrive. loads of bands have a drummer that only knows how to use the double-bass.

I love death, by the way, but only if it's...well.... creative. I don't need another song consisting of muted powerchords and yelling insanely loud into a microphone. It has to be something new, damnit.

I prefer progressive metal like Mastodon and Opeth. What I hate is when ignorant fucks say "ewww its jus screaming any idiot can do that imma go listen to Muse and Kanye West now".

Some good, some really not good stuff out there. There is a relatively unknown band I like called Necrophagist who have some serious guitar skill. I do tend to head towards the more melo-death stuff. Another good one (don't really know if you can call it death metal mind, more like progressive than anything) is between the buried and me.

Its not really complicated but I am terribly disappointed with a lot of black/death metal, because of the vocals. A lot of this music is fantastically melodic and great...but the growling/howling vocals ruin ANYTHING they come into contact with. It's like a shit-Midas.

Could you please give these songs a listen?
I had no idea that classified as death metal. I suppose I've a pretty narrow view, seeing as I've only heard more modern Death metal bands, like Nile, who are good and all, but they don't really do anything for me.
I've heard of death, but never their music. It was pretty awesome though! (well more so the first song)
Must check em out...

Also, I'm going to include melodic death metal as death metal, because I love that shit.

I love it.
Admittedly, most death metal I listen to is melo-death. I'll listen to plain death if I get to hear awesome guitar solos though.
I like this guy. Melo-death and Progressive Death are the best. Opeth is a good one.
And I love you both.

Opeth, CoB, In Flames, DevilDriver, etc. FTW

Horrid. The vocals always annoy me.

I'd rather listen to electronic music. And I HATE electronic music.
Thisthisthisthisthis.
Besides I disagree with the huge level of skill that people say is in it, for the guitar all thats needed is insanely fast picking, arpeggios and sweep picking, the drums are normally double or triple kicks which I think takes the skill out of drumming, and the bass normally just follows the rythm guitar with only minor breaks. And the vocals could be replicated by slowly lowering a pig into a mincer.

It's awesome if it has some melody in there. So yeah, I love melodic death metal. The guitar is usually pretty awesome too.

Also the ignorance is this thread is mindblowing, but not surprising. :D

I like my metal music, but don't listen to death metal. The vocals are too growly, not pleasant on my ears (instumentals are fine) so it is not my cup of tea. I listen mainly to power and prog metal bands such as Ayreon, Serenity and Blind Guardian, as well as more "tradional" metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Megadeath. I like Rammstein, Linderman's vocals are not too growly so sound fine.

There are a couple of exceptions though, usually this is if i really love the instumentals.

Personally I prefer Folk/Pagan/Viking Metal and Black metal compared to death metal. I believe it has it's place but what I don't like is that it is mostly brutal for brutalities sake. Someone mentioned they like Cannibal Corpse. The one song title I can remember is 'Fucked with a Knife'. I don't see the point other than just screaming about violence. Yes, the metal that I prefer is FILLED with violence but there is usually a good story behind it. Point is, enjoy your music where ever you find it and Hail Satan!

Deathspell Omega is black metal, its never been close to death metal at all. But Deathspell Omega is a great band, perhaps the best of Black Metal.
Yeah I don't know anything about the different genres, thanks for the info though.

For the fun of asking, what death metal bands would you call the best?

Meh.

Some is alright. Most isn't. I dislike the idea that growling and horking up mucus into a mic can be considered lyrics or artistry, but I appreciate skilled musicians no matter what sort of band they're in.

So yah, I'll listen to Death Metal or Speed Metal or whatever as long as they keep a muzzle on the dog and just play, or have an actual talented singer who can vocalise mostly-coherent verse.
