Bloody hell man, 10,000 words? That's longer than any essay they're demanding I write! And I read it all. Huh.

Anyway, OT: Interesting points, no doubt. I can't say I entirely agree with you (although you have my full and undying support on Tomb Raider) you're certainly braver than most to come here and say stuff that's clearly gonna get you some extravagant flaming. Hats off to you.

Were you trying to fill a library with your thoughts, and got lost on the way there or something?

I mean, Jesus. This is the first thing on this website I've ever come across that I actually refused to read because of how big it was, and I've seen some huge ones. This should've been posted in a blog over a series of weeks and months, not dumped all in one forum post.

In summary; it was too long, and so I did not read. For this reason alone I had to comment.

while i could agree on quite a few of those, some of what you said is subjective person to person, so there is that... (kotor is easily in my top 3 games of all time, and while you absolutely loathed the combat, i absolutely love it, the combination of turn based in a real time setting) and i understand that is more of an objective thing, they did that gameplay on purpose, not because they were "slacking" off on it, the same gameplay, just a bit more polished, is in kotor II as well and that was one of the main reasons why i bought the second one and is also why i bought dragon age for the same reason.

but overall, not too bad, i could see why you picked each of those games.

I only read your GTA one to be honest, I either havent played or dont care for the other games on this list, still I'll just add this.

GTA4 seems to be a very love it or hate it game, Im firmly in the love it camp, as I find a lot of the things you found annoying to be fantastic, I do think the story hit the right mix of wacky and serious, although it was mainly focusing on the serious. I thought it was a great idea that Rockstar were finally making a serious story, and by god it worked, GTA4 has possibly my favourite story in any game ever, rivalled only by Red Dead Redemption. Ill agree that the multiplayer was a bit iffy though.

Also I have Saints Row as well, I say let Saints Row deal with all the crazy shit and let GTA take a slightly more serious path

But I did see how you managed to get KotOR on that list.

Shame on you.

This is literally the most pretentious, self-serving thread I have ever seen. You, sir, may be the Armond White of gaming but without the actual qualification of being a "critic". You are critical (of the smallest, most insignificant things) but you are not a critic. It doesn't help your cause when you try to use complicated prose to sound intelligent.

I respect different opinions, but a video game is what you make of it. Why ***** about John Marston shooting donkeys or whatever the hell that was when you're the one MAKING him do it? That's not a disconnect between the story and the gameplay, it's a disconnect between the game itself and you.

I scrolled down half way and decided yeh I agree with you mostly then I saw increasing amounts of sacralidge... MGS4,Red Dead,KOTOR and finally Tombraider.

But you took particular offense with the old Tombraider games controls. If you have a problem with the controls well then either you must be pretty bad at the games or you just don't get them. The controls are a core part of tombraider much like Resident evils tank controls are and even Metal Gear Solids. They work, they add to the tension, to the difficulty, they make the game skillful and most importantly rewarding. If you don't have the patience to get used to them and get good at them don't play the games.

Also comments about Lara and sexism are dumb. The games were good that's why people bought them. And to think people bought them to stare at jagged breasts is equally stupid.

Actually looking at alot of these you tend to attack the controls. All of the ones you go for work fine and function well. I don't think you understand how restrictive control schemes actually make games better. Or again you are just not very good at these games.

Regarding MGS4, there are alot of cutscenes granted but if you are a true MGS fan you are more than happy to see them and I found the whole end to the series compeltely satisfying. No more need for ambiguity as it's an end to a saga. Gameplay wise it is brilliant and there is enough to keep you busy provided you play the game properly and play non-lethal, no detections. The running and gunning is there if you want to but it is something which I believe was put in for those whom had completed the game and wanted to just shoot everything for a bit of light relief. If you begin the game and aim to play it as a shooter then you are seriously retarded.

And you were doing so well in the beginning. I wanted to hug you for mentioning how BioShock is inferior to System Shock 2 and for your comments on Black, Halo 2 and Half-life 2. But the latter arguments are just completely off.

I'm sorry, I have a very high tolerance for wordy posts but that thing is just bloody ridiculous.

The fact that it's the same old "overrated games" thread doesn't help.

EDIT: Okay, read a couple that applied to games I care about. Yeah, some of your criticisms are perfectly legitimate and you've done a decent job of not being a dick about it. However, I think you should bear in mind that when people say a game is "great" or "brilliant", they're not necessarily saying it's perfect.

You need a qualification to be a critic now?
Like I said, anyone can be critical, but not everyone can be a "critic". Critic implies professional aptitude for reviewing things and analyzing them. If the OP gives me evidence that he is, I will retract that statement. However, if he is just another guy from around the 'net, I'll call him critical and leave it at that.

Tryzon uses Wall of Text
...it's super effective!
Wild Forum user faints, Tryzon received 500xp.

You know, I think you'd be better served posting something of this length (and frankly of this topic) to a personal blog, where you can format it better and break it up so it's not such an imposing wall of text. That or it's a better topic for the review forum, but yeah 10k words is waaay to much for the average forum goer to want to read. Let alone if it's just a rambling list of games you don't like.

If you wanted to foster an actual discussion about it then you'd have been better off with short, succinct summations of why you disliked them. Thus leaving room for people to come in, quickly read through your OP, and then discuss the points in further detail.

Again though, use a blog or the review forum next time. This is rather out of place where it currently stands.

I'm not going to go tl;dr, for I did read the parts about games I have played and therefore can say something about, but more like "too long; won't answer" because addressing everything point you raised is WAY more than I can bother to write.

A short version of my views, however: Yeah, I think Half-Life is a great game, but not perfect though apparently revered by some as such; I find myself an odd man out in liking Halo 2 the best of all Halo games, the final boss and ending were a bad move, but the rest of the game to me felt just like the first game had now been perfected, and that goes double for multiplayer; and finally, jeez, you're not running the 100m sprint, the KotOR movement speed is perfectly understandable! It just sounds like you're more of the Bethesda school of exploration and wonder -based RPGs than the BioWare story and character driven RPGs. And that's fine, to each his own. But KotOR damn well is my own.

Wow, are you my long lost twin or something, because I completely agree with everything you said. Especially about the Tomb Raiders which are some of my favourite games, polygonal boobies be damned.

Also, to like Metal Gear Solid 4 you must be a fan, a pretty huge one at that. The game alienates pretty much anyone that isn't a huge fan of the series. So, if you are not one then it's just going to seem rather bad, and far too long winded.
