These are both the "building a town or fortress and surviving" type of game. Both seem very promising.
I have played the demo of Towns that is on Steam, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
However, Timber and Stone looks like a lot of fun. I have watched some let's plays and such, but have never gotten my hands on it.
I can't really afford both (college budget is thin) and even if I could, one would take up more time than the other.
Help me out please!

Dwarf Fortress is free you know.

But if you're really set on either of these two, I'd go with Timber and Stone.

I know that it is, and have tried it. But I just couldn't do it :(

I personally have tried both myself and I found that I enjoyed T&B more. T&B is challenging to the point of frustration but I keep going back for more, Its buggy but its creator Robert Reed has some really awesome plans for the game that really will make it even better. As well as the style of the game, I prefer more then towns. But that's just my opinion.

Towns seems like it's barely out of it's alpha stage to be honest.
Never heard of Timber and Stone, but honestly I'd suggest against getting Towns.

Timber and Stone. Tbh, I haven't looked in to Towns, but from what I've played of T&S so far (The initial beta and the 1.0 release), I'd go for that. Its a bit difficult to start with, but it becomes a bit more manageable once you learn how things work.

There's also Gnomoria, a Dwarf Fortress Light in isometric view.

as for those two you mentioned, I don't think I could stand Towns' inconsequent aethetics, so..
