(Searchbar approved, as far as I can tell)
I recently whored myself out in the name of free advertising and created a Twitter account. I've delved into Twitter before and found myself ashamed to admit that I have one, simply because it seems that everything that goes on there is utter crap. And yet, I keep going back.

What does the Escapist think about Twitter?

I post on it occasionally, but I mostly use it to see what others are up to.

I update mine constantly. I also follow about 20 people (including The Escapist) and I find it very useful for getting constant news updates. Like, I know a lot about things that are going on through Twitter. Also, all my friends have one and it's good for telling what they're doing or having small conversations that everyone can read.

Oh yeah, everyone needs to follow me on Twitter.

EDIT: Oh yeah, it's also much better than the dump that is now FaceBook. I used to love FaceBook and then it got taken over MySpace style by little girls who find it hilarious to make and join thousands upon thousands of "Like" groups or whatever they are.

I don't use Twitter, so the only exposure I get is when a celebrity or a friend talks about good 'tweets' they've seen (wasn't that how the cop in 'Allo 'Allo pronounced the word 'Twits'? Maybe I'm just guessing wildly now)

I very quickly learned that when someone says 'so on Twitter' I can safely shut my brain down for the ten seconds it takes to recount the highlarious Twitter tale, and not miss anything.

People say that brevity is the soul of wit.

They forget that Shakespeare was attaching his 'brevity' to this most hypocritical and unwitty character he's ever written.

Also, we were once told that a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters could type Shakespeare, thanks to the Internet and Twitter, we have now proven this to be false.

I have one but.... I just don't understand it.... It is conversations or what? I don't know why you follow people either, because I can't even follow what's going on!! And what's up with all the # @ business!!

Most people's tweets are inane drivel. However, some online celebrities such as Yahtzee and The Spoony One, have Twitter accounts that it's worthwhile to look into every once in a while, if you're a fan of them.

Here's something others should remember. You don't go there for the advertising, you go there for:
A)Following people you want to know what they're up to, i.e musicians, writers, organizations, etc.
B)Easy anonymous chatting with people outside your area (like other Escapists).

There's actually quite a lot of us on it, constantly interacting with each other.

Twitter is only as good as the people you follow. If you follow idiots, chances are it will feel idiotic.

I hate those "like" groups too, you see more people joining groups than actual posts...I should join a group expressing these feelings

See, I tried that once with another account, and it has kind of a creepy, voyeuristic feeling to it. It's not like you talk to the people, you just look at their conversations with others. I kinda compare it to digging through a celebrity's trash to find all their interpersonal mail.

I have a twitter and I talked to the friends I have on there quite often. Hell, it's how I met a majority of my friends here.

There is one major reason why I have a Twitter.

Talk with a small amount of people online that I do not have access to in person. I keep to myself and the people I "follow". I started the account to talk to friends I genuinely care about that also have accounts. (Though there is this one chick who uses hashtags a bit too liberally. :D)

Though, I will give Twitter this. Because there are SO many people, you can get up to the minute news on just about anything, for example, if you missed a show and wanted to know who got kicked off. It's actually kind of wierd.

The two misconceptions people have about Twitter:

1) It's not just someone posting things like "lol im goin 2 the toilet wish me luck" and then "lol it was graet".

2) It's not constant plugging of goods or services.

What Twitter is is a way of getting the news straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak, be it Peter Serafinowicz's jokes or the BBC's breaking news.

That's pretty much what it is.
