My school is a public school and recently they implemented an extremely strict dress code that everyone calls a "Uniform" even though its not. Basicaly you can only wear school colors, right down to your sock. Only exception to the dress code is shoes. Your shirt must have a collar or be a turtle neck and it has to be tucked in with a belt. Socks have to be solid colors with not stripes or anything.

Do you think public schools should actually be allowed to do this? Many people can't really afford the new clothes because they are more expensive then average clothes. Our school had to set up a little turn in box so people who can't afford to buy clothes that fit the dress code can pick up a pair and even if you shirt came untucked from bending over you could get an office referal.

Rundown of the Code:
-Collared or turtleneck shirts
-Shirts tucked in plus belts
-kahki pants only
-no hair that can obstruct vision ie. bangs that cover an eye, ect.
-only top button allowed undone
-skirts are allowed, and jumpers
-No hoodies or jackets inside school or referal
-1 warning for dress code violation
-No hats allowed
-No clothing with a logo of any kind outside of the school logo are permited on any clothing

And i'm probally missing some too. [Found one I left out]

Do you think public schools should follow our towns example or do you think that no school should have a dress code this strict?

[edit]
We've had this dress code for a few years

If you found any negativity in this post i'm sorry i'm not trying to complain, I was trying to state the facts so I could get an honest answer out of the people of the escapist.

The school implimented the dress code for boost public image and to help decrease the occurence of bullies on students with economic problems.

That seems outrageous, what school is it you go to?

Edit, Completely forgot to give my views.

No, They should not be allowed to use such scrict dress codes, a simple uniform to keep everything is order is fine, but something like that.

No, Just no.

Shit is that a school or a prison? Oh wait same thing :/ But anyway, that seems pretty ridiculous even for a private school. It saddens me to think that you had to get a collection box going just so some kids can go to school without getting detention because their parents aren't as well off.

Their school, their rules. You may not like having to wear a work uniform but it is part of life and you really have no say in it other than go somewhere else.
I agree its there rules but when people can't even afford to go by it they should make adjustments. Plus they also promised us casual days and such and completely cancled them and are making us pay to wear jeans instead of the regular kahki's. There was more to this post but I forgot what I had to say halfway through typing. I'll edit it if I can renember.

You're allowed a top button undone? Lucky bastard.

Meh, you'll get used to it, and believe me, the rules wont be followed. I'd give it 2 weeks before you guys find out a way to wear it your own way.
Its been over 2 years, they keep adding more and more to the code and are getting stricter and stricter with everything.

The other day one person got send to ISS for being turned in his seat, Another two for talking, and another for giving the teacher her papers back for being out of line. All of this in the first five mintues of school. They've also restricted the time we can use our lockers so half the people carry all their school supplies with them all day.

I'm against public school uniforms, but for dress codes that prohibit "revealing" clothing. Your schools dress code is very strict though. Ouch.

To be honest, I don't think it's that big of a deal. You're going to school to learn, not to make some kind of fashion statement.

None of those rules are too overbearing except that one. Fine, have a school dress code that people can take off when they get home or whatever, but don't make them keep a specific hair-cut. That's just fucking stupid and unfair.
You can pin the hair or whatever as long as they don't think it can obstruct your view, they won't say anything

In a school I know you have to be practically bald... so yeah.

In my old school you had to where a white shirt, black leather shoes (or leather look), black pants, school tie and a blazer.
The shirt had to be tucked in and the tie a certain length. No hats or crazy hairstyles, which basically meant dyed ones.

You guys have nothing to complain about, seriously. And uniforms are not that bad, take it from someone who wore an actual uniform from the age of 6 to 17.

I had a pretty loose one in middle school. Khakis, polo shirts, and a limit to the size of any icon on the shirt. Wasn't really enforced all that heavily, either.

I always thought it was just a really lazy way to make sure no one wears anything offensive. Or just a really outdated tradition of some kind.

As a passionate individualist, I think the very concept of a dress code is ridiculous, and especially hair.

Sure, school is for learning, not for making fashion statements, but dress codes have nothing to do with learning. I've yet to hear one single good argument FOR dress codes.

Hm, thats pretty draconian, as fa as school uniforms go. I dont see why they have to be that strict. Sure kids need a bit of discipline, but not too much.

Ours was very simple, black shoes, Black trousers/ tights, and a white Polo Shirt with the School logo on it, and a black jumper with logo.

You could wear whatever coat you wanted, have whatver bag you wanted, but they did have limits on hairstyles and for some reason, peircings. But other than that it was pretty easygoing

Well, up to about 16 I'm not bothered about uniforms, provided they're not too strict about what coat you have or what your hair's like (because you have hair when you're outside of school too. It's a bit more of an intrusion).

But if you're over 16 then I think uniforms are a pointless idea. Especially in schools (like my 6th form, but we had no uniform) that go on about you having 'independence' (but then contact your parents and not you first if you're not there).

School dress codes seem silly and comes, I imagine, from an unwillingneess to spend the money to create a uniform - but is basically the same thing. A loose dress code I can understand but if you're going to impose a strict one just impliment a uniform. I saw.

My Intermediate school and my High school had uniforms. Nothing wrong with the ones I had to wear, they were kind of standard, shorts, long socks, grey shirt and grey jersey for juniors, option to wear business trousers, a white shirt and tie with black jersey for seniors. Both could wear the blazer if they chose to. Some uniforms are awful though, the one my sister had to wear had a winter and summer version. Summer version was reasonable, winter one would have kept you warm in the bloody arctic.
