Ok, i don't know if any of you guys have seen this yet but Epic games has ported the UE3 (unreal engine 3) to the iPhone. Now I know you might not think this is awesome or anything like that, but you have to see the video on it. It looks absolutely stunning (for a portable game). Sure, its a tech demo, but a game half of this graphical quality would blow any DS or PSP game out of the water. It has lens-flare, reflective surfaces, extremely tall environments, high detail, and shaders (i think)! The link to the video is right down here. So I gotta ask, do you guys think this will spark a revolution of high quality games for mobile systems, or will it just die like so many other technologies?

(sorry I don't know how to do hyperlinks)

edit: i guess it does them automatically

No it wouldn't, this is impressive because of the software not the hardware.
You're looking at the wrong part of why Epic showed this off.

I just don't like complex games on the iTouch, the lack of buttons makes the controls really bad for a lot of games.

I think its really amazing, we have a game on a phone that out does the graphics on a handheld game system.

Not impressed. Next!

It's just basic textures (heavily compressed I bet) and static lighting. Nothing phenomenal.

no thanks, the only games ill ever play on the iphone are simple strategy games and oregon trail, i need a controller not a stupid touch screen if you want me to consider it an actual gaming platform. and that does NOT outdo the psp, its just the software of the engine showing off.

In terms of evolving gaming I doubt it will do much. In terms of processing capability though, it does show a lot of potential for the development of gaming software.

Well, it looks pretty and all, but playing games that require toggles on the iPhone is a pain in the ass. I've got a couple on my iPhone and I rarely ever play them, because even though they're functional the toggles they make on the screen are annoying and they block your view of seeing the actual game. If they want to release bluetooth toggles for the iPhone or something like that, then I'd be completely sold, but as long as you have to use those stupid little virtual toggles, I think I'll stick to The Legend of Soltar (AKA solitaire)

the iPhone is a gimic. I have one, but would never in a million years consider myself a serious gamer if that was my "console".

It's kind of like the old saw about the dancing bear- it's not impressive that it does it well so much as that it does it at all.

I rather feel that Apple is slowly sinking into capital E Evil, so while the tech demo is kind of cool, I don't feel I'm going to be missing anything essential. Tell me when they get Unreal tech running on the Nintendo 3DS.

The thing with Unreal Engine is that it doesn't have to be just used for FPS games, you could design anything with it, so that could mean a very impressive looking turn based RPG.

That's stunning. The Unreal engine is very versatile and can produce some pretty sick stuff.
However i wish they're turn their attention elsewhere instead of mobile phones ;[
