A Hermit's Cave
My fellow Escapists...

I'm British, and naturally speak English with quite a high-class accent, but for some reason, it doesn't really sit well with a lot of people I come across. So, over time, I've developed a knack for speaking with an East London/deep-Essex accent. But was that the right thing to do?

So, I ask you: what is your opinion of people who speak 'Queen's English' or like George Osborne (for non-Brits, he's the Chancellor of the Exchequer and is due to inherit a Barony or Baronetcy along with a massive amount of money, so he's a popular hate figure over here).

And then, what do you think of the stereotypical Stephen Fry accent?

A penny for your thoughts and I'd rather there was no change.

I would have liked more options on the poll. My personal vote would have gone for: I speak like that and most of the time it pisses me off. It's great with the ladies though, so it's not all bad.

That pretty much says exactly how I feel about the way that I speak.

I would kill for an accent like that. ANY accent, in fact. I've heard myself, and it makes me want to tear out my vocal chords.

If Stephen Fry has one then I love them. I use an over the top English accent whenever I'm trying to be smug. I'm not sure what type of English I'm imitating though.

Meh. After doing a few video projects with people I know, I realised I sound somewhat like that kind of accent too.

Honestly, I wish I didn't, but it seems to win over some people. It just makes people more likely to hit me in the face too.

What accent is it that you have?

I have no accent whatsoever. Well, I have been told that it's slightly Scottish, but I can't hear it.

Everyone has an accent. It's impossible not to have one, it's just the way you speak. You said it yourself, slightly Scottish.

You CAN pull it off, but only if you're really charming and witty. Being self-deprecating probably helps, since the accent pretty much screams 'I'm better than you!'. I'm from East Sussex, so my accent is probably on the posher end of the English scale, but it's tweaked enough that it would only really seem like that to someone from another country (or perhaps to northerners).

But it's not, I tell you!

I talk with an upper class accent ¬_¬ Which is weird because my dad is from Liverpool and my mum is from Ipswich and I grew up in East London but to be honest I like how I talk so I guess it's just life.

Aren't accents fascinating though? XD

XD That's because you said you can't hear it: no-one can hear their own accent.

Hell, until I started living up North everyone told me I had no accent. Then went I went up North I was suddenly "UBER-POSH SOUTHERNER!"

It's an accent that's easy on the ears, unlike some. I am told that I sound slightly welsh but I can't hear it. As well, it's probably due to being friends with Welsh accents because I love the Welsh Valley accent. Oh, I also live in Wales. Ho hum. The 'Upper Class' English accent was due to people encouraged to speak the 'Queen's English' and was rampent on TV in the '60s, '70s and '90s. Accents don't bother me, only people trying to force their accent down your throat.

But I've recorded myself, and the result makes me want to tear out my vocal chords.

If that is how you speak then speak like that. I see no problem with it. I personally speak standard English with a slight Devon accent.

I have a (female) friend who speaks with a quite upper class British accent, (I can't actually remember which area of England she is from) but I think her accent is heaps hot. It also really fits with her sarcastic personality... Mmmm... :D

They annoy the hell out of me but only because I know a certain someone who is very annoying and talks with one.

I live in the North of England and one of my friends who came up from Bournemouth (I think) told me I have the most Northern English accent he's ever heard. Would be a laugh to go to a posh area down south and just see what they think of me from my voice alone.
