Ok now after reading through a few old articles on The Escapist i have found that 99.99% (that .01% are the ones you personally like) of video game movies are a load of tripe.
With this being said, many director's have had at least attempts at trying to make them half decent but have failed quite miserably.

Now i found this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games] list and found i had never heard of half of them, is it shoddy advertising or do people know the movies will turn out bad so just avoid them anyway?

So will every video game movie be something to avoid or can we count on at least one director to make something that will be a masterpiece.

Well at least Uwe Boll isn't judging a competition for best video game movie [http://www.offworld.com/2009/08/fantastic-fest-holding-uwe-bol.html]

Well I think the Mortal Kombat movies are fantastic for one. And I approved of the Hitman movie even though it wasnt fantastic.

But I am certain one movie based on a game will work. Someday. Ive always thought Urban Reign could maybe work as a game if it was done right. But thats just my opinion.

That Far Cry movie if done right could make a great movie, but I havent seen it so I cant say.

But I could see that story propelling an awsome action movie.

Advent Children? Max Payne? The new Metal Gear Solid movie coming out?

And have you forgotten the one that started it all, Super Mario Bros?

I think it could be done but like books to movie adaptations things must change. It can't be exactly the same.

If Uwe Boll gets a hand on it yeah. Some have the ability to be great, like the prince of persia or warcraft, but we will see how it goes, if its translated well it can be epic, but most of the time its not. Although some games like GTA and Doom cant really be movies since the story is silly cause most games are about gameplay
Don't think warcraft would work that well.

The RTS series, sure. But WoW has broken the story. Now it's basicly "once there was this bad guy, Then came a horde of adventures and slaugthered him/her."

MMO doesn't handle story well IMO

If you think about it, games are closer to books than films. There is masses of detail spread out over many hours, it doesn't translate very well to film.

The fact that studios hire cheap writers and directors to make them and usually employ nothing fromthe games beyond a few token 'reimagined' characters and occasionally the vaguest nod to the games visual design don't help either.

They're all doomed until film studios sart taking them seriously, hiring decent writers and actually trying to recreate the look and feel of the game they're filming.

Why does your poll make it out that anyone who likes game movies is retarded? I'm annoyed by that, I liked Hitman, and hear good things about Max Payne. I'm also looking forward to the Warcraft and Halo movies.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was... "meh".

Adevent Children was nice, mostly fan service, doesn't really stand on it's own legs as a full-length feature for non-FF fans.

Looking at that poster for the Prince of Persia movie, i'm actually kind of excited that they managed to get an actor who resembles the Prince (although it's actually his getup from Warrior Within, now that I look at it). They seem to be doing everything pretty well, maybe that will be a decent game-to-movie translation.

And judging by the sheer amount of jump scares in Dead Space, plus all the gore, the game would probably make for a pretty easy translation into movie territory. We have the necessary special effects to recreate the Necromorphs, but the only problem would be Isaac's lack of dialogue.

indeed and the warcraft series are a little bit too long it would take like 6 movies for just warcraft 1 warcraft 2 and warcraft 3 and if you have already started then you probably have to do a frozen throne movie too and then everyone will be like "wtf it cant end with the bad guys still living" and then it will just continue...

Just end it like they did in WC lore... "Then came a horde of adventures and slaugthered him." this is true for Illidan and within half a year prolly Arthas as well. would make for a great movie eh? :p

One problem. It's Prince of Persia.

Jake Gyllenhaal does not look Persian to me. Neither does Gemma Arterton. Or most of the other cast members.

It's not really detrimental or anything, but it does take away a little of the immersion to cast blatantly white actors in the role of an arab, asian or anything role. Though I must say Ben Kingsley did a remarkable job playing Ghandi, so he could probably pull it off.

It might still be a good movie though.
