I can still remember the first time I played it at a friends house...

MGS and Thief. I picked MGS though because of it's story, details (such as parodies and combat features like customizable weapons, etc.), and versatile combat (choice between stealth or action). MGS games pretty much are almost perfect except for a couple things like the lack of length in the gameplay in MGS4, but that's minor.

Splinter Cell but not necessarily the first one. Too linear.
