I liked the first one. Bigger battles mostly. And playing as the Imp. Gaurd using cheats so I can just use them to overwhelm an enemy base (pc ai of course) by sheer numbers, like in the lore. (sorry for double post)

Both tbh, they are both good for different reasons. Plus Retribution is out in march and that is back to the recipie closer to 1 with building and multiple race story arcs.

Dawn of War 2, but I love both of them. Moving small amounts of units tactically around feels more satisfying to me than making as many units as possible then steamrolling across the map (abeit half the players on DoW2 trying that anyway).

#1, if you're picking up Dark Crusade. Great RTS game.

The 2nd is good...But very bland. The squad command thing is good, and makes the campaigns really quite interesting to play. Lack of bases and lack of real depth make it feel half-hearted though.

Both are worthy purchases, though.

They're both really good, but I think 2 wins it for the better graphics and faster gameplay. Also, the multiplayer modes are unique and interesting.

It's close though (and I'm still pissed off about them patching the shit out of Tyranids...)

Dawn of War Dark Crusade is my favourite, but DoW 1 without any expansions is ok but not great.

Although I am really looking forward to this game, lets see how it goes.

First one, for the RTS style gameplay. That said, I'm getting Dawn of War II: Retribution when it comes out, for sure.

I find the first one to be much more fun. The second one looks very nice, but I just prefer the whole base building element. So I'm going to go with the first.

Dark Crusade was by far the best in the series, little things like the commanders talking to each other (and in eliphas' case trolling the other commanders) set it apart from Soulstorm.

This is hard to answer, for me, because I honestly didn't ever get a lot of time with the games, as I never got it, mostly because my computer can't really handle anything made in the last two or three years. I did get to play it on my uncle's computer though, and while I didn't get to play much of the story, or any of the multiplayer, I think that the single player mode is significantly better than the original, which I have played extensively. And since I am more of a single player person, I'd say that Dawn of War II is the better of the two games.

Both are equally fun and awesome to me. However! The first Dawn of War had the Imperial Guard. I love the Imperial Guard.

The first Dawn of War was a fresh take-on on RTS games with many interesting mechanics. It show racial diversity not only in units, but a diversity in structures and racial mechanics.

Dawn of War 2 is a void of no fun and joy, it deprives the soul of any form of entertainment. The units are boring, the base mechanics are poorly substituted and the races don't feel that different from one-another (whatever I play Elder or Space Marines, it's pretty much the same stuff, different tools). DoW 2 looks like some 3-rd rated studio's rip-off of CoH.

I like DoW2 better mainly because I don't like RTS that much. I liked the squad command of the game in single player. I don't like RTS so I don't play them on line.

Gotta go with 2.

First game is too easy once you can build Terminators and Land Raiders, they just roll right over everything. I find the Imperial Guard immensely frustrating, and not in the way that makes me want to "learn to play them." They just plain suck. Also the continuous resource generation means you can just throw waves of dudes and win through attrition without strategizing. Can't do that in 2.

Two because it makes me feel like more of Space Marine. I used to play them on the tabletop, and two feels more accurate to how they worked. I.E. small but powerful force that needs a little bit of balls, and maneuvering to be truly great. Really though, both are fantastic games.

Dark Crusade made DoW 1 one of the best SP campaigns ive played in recent memory, i loved how you were basically able to level and keep a small strike force to use no matter the map DoW2 was just damn frustrating for me in the SP campaign seriously i just run around and circle strafe the bad guys....and seriously what the hell was with how flimsy the dreadnought was...like wet tissue

I'm going to go with 2, just because I loved the RPG elements in the campaign, as well as how they tried to characterize your units so you actually cared for them. It just made it feel more like you were actually playing as the Space Marines, each warrior able to smash through dozens of enemy troops, which I really didn't feel in the first one.

Also, points for Cyrus burning Iron Lore's Soulstorm expansion:

The IG is actually damn good if you can upgrade them quick and get them out there fast enough.

As for continuous resource generation, you need to capture parts of the map to get resources in the first place, therefore, you camp you die.
You simply won't have enough to get you're most powerful units and you'll be steamrolled by whoever can hold onto the most territory.
Early on especially good scouting and resource point capturing is an absolute necessity.
Personally I think thats awesome, in most RTS games the action will almost always be in a certain area, like a road or central town or something, in Relic RTS's dozens of units kill each other over flags scattered around the place, it makes it so you can't do the same thing over and over as much.

DoW2 for campaign.
DoW Dark Crusade with the Firestorm over Kronus mod [http://www.moddb.com/mods/dawn-of-warhammer-40k-firestorm-over-kronus] for multiplayer.
