your thoughts? Be understanding of other people's beliefs and tradtions in your replies.

Personally I think it's a horrible concept especially for younger girls and women but yeah, an important tradition in many societies and one that cannot be stopped easily.

(Edit)and for those of you with strong opinions who do not want to 'be understanding of other people's beliefs and traditions' please refrain from involving religion or race into yout response.

Shotgun weddings? (It's just a figure of speech, don't worry... ok I lied.)

Yeah, I hate em. I think they're pretty.. inhumane. I believe you cannot force love.

At least its a guaranteed marriage or else there is the chance that you end up like me, alone.

I'm not partial to the idea of it, but then again there is a lot I'm not in favor of that I have to get used to happening here on this fabulous planet.

Not in the Southern US, unfortunately.

I hate to be blunt, but... what do you think my thoughts on *anything* forced would be?

There you go.

No.

It's basically rape.
Tradition can go fuck itself.
Exactly. Forced genital mutliation is a cultural-religous tradition in some African countries. And "honor killings" of women who were raped are a cultural-religious tradition in many middle eastern countries. I'm not about to respect either of these just because they're long held beliefs and traditions. Why should I make an exception for a tradition that forces people into relationships that they don't get to choose for themselves?

Fair enough, I wrote that just in case people start getting a bit racist or personal. Tbh I agree. It irritates me that it's the father that gets to choose and judgng by all the stories they generally don't have their daughter's best interests at heart...

Especially when they're breaking the law. If they want to be mysogenists, they can go find somewhere where it is, sadly, still legal. Expecting a country to let people break the law for the sake of "tradition" (and not actually their religion, mind you) is their being demanding and insensitive...

What the hell?

England, is there something you haven't been telling us in the U.S.?
England has become very mixed cultured over the last few years and due to not wanting to cause racial offense acts such as this cann't be banned. Only prevented.

Again, I just didn't want people to be racist or make unwanted and unconstructed arguments against other people's religions. I completely agree.

For some reason I find myself on the fence with this one. I personally don't like it, but... it feels wrong to throw away tradition.

That must be my inner Conservative coming out. Goddamn you, you're only supposed to be around for economic and political topics! *beats back with freedom stick*

I hate it. Those poor people that get "forced" into it... it's just not fair on the people involved, only their parents usually.

Not every forced marriage ends up like Apu and Manjula Nahasapeemapetilons did. I voted for "a bad tradition", but I also think it should be "abolished from society".

Society... is that what they're calling it these days? I just call it a bunch of broken systems that force unhappiness from most people. Sort of like forced marriages...

See what I did there?
